Sudden decrease is sound volume

I've noticed that the sound on my iPhone has decreased. Earphones and the speaker work fine. It's listening to the ear speaker (does that make sense?).

I've tried turning the volume up (of course) and going into settings. Being sure that the speaker was clear...that helped a bit.

Anything else I can do?

Macbook, iPhone OS 3.1.2, iPhone 3G

I have been searching this forum for awhile now, 1st post btw, and I have seen alot of complaints about the iPhone's low earpiece volume. I thought it was just me or I had a bad unit, but I see that this is not the case. I love my iphone, but if the sound volume issue isn't resolved I think I might go back to my old phone and just buy an ipod touch. There is enough tech in the iphone so call volume should be a non-issue in my opinon. Hope Apple or AT&T address this problem soon.

Did you check to see if there's any dirt/debris plugging the ear speaker port? If not, go through the routine troubleshooting steps as discussed in the User Guide: Reset phone, reset settings, restore in iTunes from backup, restore as a new iPhone.

If none of this helps, there may be a hardware problem that requires evaluation by an Apple technician. Make and appt. with an Apple Store Genius Bar.
