Bulging Battery!

My BlackBook 2,4 has been fine up to now, 99% used on my desk.

Today I picked it up to move it and noticed that the bottom of the battery case was bulging out a bit. One the one hand, it seems like the glue is actually coming off of it, you can push it back. On the other hand, there seems to be an actual bulging out (if I push the black plastic bit back on, the bottom bulges out a bit.

AppleCare are not open until Monday, (still got 1.5 years left on coverage and I hope they'll do something about it). But before then, any people got any knowledge of MacBook batteries doing this? ANy personal experience? Is it about to explode?

I'm right in the middle of an assignment for my Masters degree, so I'm less than pleased with the timing.

Cheers

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Remove the battery from your computer and do not put it back in. Leaving the bulging battery in place could damage your computer.

The battery shouldn't explode; these batteries are supposed to expand if there is some malfunction.

Good call about taking the battery out, I'll do that.

As for Apple not replacing it, I imagine there will be some kind of "negotiation" but I'm prepared to argue that a battery that still holds charge OK but is so misshapen that it's breaking the plastic casing is not normal behaviour. We'll see what they say...

None of us here can give definite answers for the conditions that qualify a battery for free replacement.

Some batteries that are 2 or more years old will be replaced at no cost to the consumer. Bring your computer & battery in, along with the power adapter, explain the situation, and (most importantly!) be polite.

Best of luck!

Thanks to both of you for your replies.

Yep, I know nobody here can give a definitive answer, just throwing my experience out there to see if anybody had anything similar.

Off to AC on Tuesday (Monday has now got to be all-day writing session or I'm going to miss my MA deadline) with a super-polite attitude, fingers crossed I don't have to pay for a new battery.

Just recently my trackpad started to behave erratically. I noticed the battery was bulging. Took it out and it was quite misshapen. Removed the screws and inside the cells were ballooning quite large.

Had no problem keping a charge.

Apple would not help me. Offered to sell a new battery. On research I noted Apple had been replacing bulging batteries but program ended. Interesting in how Apple never emailed me, a register owner of a model Macbook that was affected by battery problems. I accept a battery losing its ability to charge or hold a charge, as normal with age. Bulging, distorted, batteries however is abnormal and affects the case integrity and trackpad.

The deal is unless the customer looks for the information, it will not be volunteered.

I bought an aftermarket battery. I will not purchase more Apple products.

you still need to consider that your battery did not explode on you. apple is the best computer manufacturing company in the world IMO >.<.

my dad only buys windows computers (ohno's!!)
one of his laptop's battery leaked uncontrollably and he lost many many important files since the battery leaked inside the laptop itself.
in another laptop of his, the battery exploded and burned his desk while he was playing a dvd.

Lots of other laptops/desktops have many many many problems. I have looked at a lot of companies and some have even refused to acknowledge that their computer had a problem. Apple is far more reliable than a lot of other companies IMO.

I'm sorry to hear that you went through this problem but I everything has its ups and downs. I hope you will look at Apple Products again.

p.s. Merry Christmas to you all!!!!

I have the bulging battery problem as well, however, mine is not not nearly as extreme as other cases. Mine is only slightly and hardly noticeable bulging, however, it is affecting the trackpad to the point where I can move the cursor and scroll but nothing else. The button sticks and I cannot tap the pad (or two-finger tap for right click).

I do not know if this is a safe solution, but until I am able to get to an Apple Store, I've slipped in a hard plastic credit card sized non-magnetic (obviously) card that seems to be allowing flawless use of the trackpad.

For those that have drastically bulging batteries...obviously get them replaced, but I think for those with only very slight and hardly noticeable bulging, this might be a simple solution to get you your trackpad back if only temporarily.

Yep, I've got the "bulging battery" as well. Causing similar malfunctions (track pad issues and random word/line selection when I try to type)to those mentioned.
I have yet to inquire about it under my extended warranty but from what I read here I won't be holding my breath for a replacement.

As a long time Mac user (I still have my WORKING Mac SE) I have to say that this Macbook has been the most disappointing Apple product I have ever owned (had to send it back twice for the "flickering screen" problem that Apple has never admitted to having AND the case has cracked).
I will still recommend Apple products over any compatible PC ... but now I have to include the caveat that a Mac will probably give you less problems then a PC.
