Can't complete download of iTunes

I've just bought an iPod Shuffle but I've had no success in completing the download of iTunes. It either times out or just keeps getting stuck.

I'm using a wireless modem and there doesn't appear to be appear signal drop-out or other loss of connection.

Help!

Using IE, the only browser that I have. The download gets so far and then gets stuck/times out. When trying to update using the the Apple Software Update icon the same thing happens. I've looked at Internet settings to see if there is some idle time disconnect thing but I can't see anything that might be a problem. The only success in downloading I have had was to use the 'save' choice rather than 'run'; however, when then trying to install, I got the error message 'invalid win 32 application'. Quick Time 7.6.5 has been successfully installed.

... ahhhh, one of those.

There's a few things we can check on with those ones Jan.

Probably the simplest thing to try first (if you're getting this with IE) is adjusting your Trusted/Restricted sites information.

Head into your Internet Options control panel. Click the Security tab, and then select "restricted sites". Click the "Sites" button.

Is there an entry in there for appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net ? If so, try deleting that.

Any better luck with downloading an installer using IE after that?

If there wasn't an entry in restricted sites, try instead heading into "Trusted sites" and adding an entry for appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net . Any better luck after that?

I'm intrigued about the "aaah, one of those" comment. You've seen these before then and it takes something else to fix?

Sorry Jan, in retrospect that comment was a bit cryptic/ominous.

We've been making some progress on these invalid signature (and related) things recently. (We, in this case, meaning me and the other folks who troubleshoot this sort of message for people here at Discussions.) A bunch of them seem related to underlying issues in the network/internet set-up of the person getting the message, although there's both a range of symptoms and range of severity of symptoms depending on the specific case (so there might be a range of possible causes).

So "aaaah ... one of those," was pretty much the sound of me putting down one set of tools and techniques, and picking up another set of tools and techniques ...

Trying to work on simpler possibilities first ... in cases where *IE 8* is having trouble, Firefox might successfully complete the download. (Firefox handles network/internet connections a bit differently than IE 8, and so sometimes a problem that is tripping up IE won't trip up Firefox or vice versa.)

So, by way of experiment, try installing Firefox:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html

Can that get you a proper download of the iTunes installer?

Just jumping in - I think what b noir is going towards is

1) IE browser settings causing problems, in which case, downloading using Firefox browser is a workaround

2) Network problems seeming to "scrub out" portions of the download without letting the PC know there was a problem. In which case, downloading from a different network/router setup is the workaround.
For example, this thread

So...can you get Firefox downloaded and installed, and then download a good copy of the itunes installer using Firefox?

I don't know about that! You excel at explaining the "why" of things.

Jan seems reluctant to install Firefox. A lot of people are - they don't want to install a program they'll only use once for troubleshooting. With free wifi available so many places, and roaming laptops, the easiest next step in troubleshooting for Jan just might be connecting to a different wireless network.

(blush) I'm still not sure how that came to be ... I think I'm going to have to stop claiming that I don't have many technical skills, though ...

Oooooh! Good point. I know it took me until about ... 2007? ... until I became the slightest bit comfortable about uninstalling *iTunes or QuickTime* in order to test things. Nowadays, I've grown a bit more blase about installing stuff experimentally and whatnot, and tend to forget how unnerving it can be at first.

So for the rarer types of these sorts of errors where Firefox is having trouble, it's probably a bit easier for folks to do the experimentation with IE, because it will be probably still installed even if folks aren't using it.

(Have had another success recently with changing Trusted/Restricted sites in Internet Options in a case where Firefox seemed grumpier than IE about the downloads. But I'm beginning to think it's sensible to try that only if Firefox has been having trouble, so it's of much more limited application than I had at first hoped.)

Jan, yes, it might be your internet connection. Did you read the links I made to other threads? Where people were able to get the download OK from another network?
At least 6 people have posted here that they switched to a different wireless network and got the download OK.

It's weird, the router delivered the itunes setup file as if it had no errors, but it was damaged enough so that the install wouldn't run/complete properly.

If I understand your situation correctly, Firefox downloaded OK and you were able to install Firefox.
Using Firefox, you are now able to download iTunes without errors, although the download seemed to pause a few times, but itunes won't install. The install fails without an error message.

I would cut to the chase, and use a different wireless network to get iTunesSetup.exe.
If this is a desktop PC, it won't be as easy to go to an internet cafe or someplace with free wireless.
In which case I would see if a friend has successfully installed itunes, and get the iTunesSetup.exe file from them on a USB memory stick.

Yours seems to be similar to the thread I posted above - that person could download and install something else (in their case, Adobe Acrobat; in your case, Firefox) but nothing from Apple.
