Copying a DVD - Changing the DVD Name

I have a short video my friend sent to me as a DVD. I used Disk Utility to create a New Image of the DVD. I then renamed the New Image .dmg file to what I want the DVD to be named.

Then I burned .dmg to a blank DVD. However, the name of the new DVD did not change and remained the same as the original DVD.

What am I doing wrong?

From Disk Utility Help:

-=-=-=-
To create a disk image from a disk or folder:

1.) Choose File > New, and then choose either “Disk Image from Folder” or “Disk Image from [disk name].”

2.) If you are creating a disk image from a folder, select it in the dialog that appears and click Image.

3.) Type a name for the disk image, and choose where you want to save it.

4,5,6,7 & 8....I think you know the process, just follow the above to name, rather than altering afterwards.

Here's the screen shot below. I was able to change the .dmg to YUAN PROMOVIDEO. But when I burn the DVD, the DVD's name is still MY GREATDVD.

How can I change the DVD name from MY GREATDVD to YUAN PROMOVIDEO?

the name of the dmg makes no difference here. what makes the difference is the name of the mounted volume you get when you mount the dmg. in this case the name of that volume is MyGREATDVD. but you can not change that name when you mount the dmg because that volume isn't writable. so what you need to do is just copy the contents of that mounted volume (presumably it contains AUDIO_TS and Video_TS folders) to a folder on your hard drive. rename that folder as you want and then burn it to a DVD using Toast or similar burning software.

Thanks for your answer.

I don't have Toast. Is there another program that I can use that I might have or would be a part of Snow Leopard? Or that is free?

sorry, don't know any free software that will burn ripped DVD. It might exist though. try googling. one free way that does not require any extra software is to make a dmg out of the renamed DVD folder and burn that from disk utility.

I finally figured it out. I think (maybe?) that part of the reason is because my friend made the short video read only.

So after I made the .dmg copy to desktop, I made a new folder and named it what I want the new DVD name to be.

I then copied the AUDIO_TS folder and the VIDEO_TS folder (that was in the .dmg) to the new folder.

Then I burned that to a blank DVD.

Voila!!

Thanks everybody for your help!

Does the new DVD work in a standalone DVD player? When you insert it in your Mac, does the DVD Player application stat automatically, as it will with a real video DVD?

Real video DVDs are formatted as UDF. OSX can read, but not write UDF. Disk Utility can make a UDF .dmg file from a video DVD, and can burn a new UDF video DVD from that .dmg file, but it cannot modify or create a new UDF .dmg file or DVD. The only Apple applications that can do that are iDVD (part of iLife) or DVD Studio Pro (part of Final Cut Studio).

You can do it with Burn (free)
<http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html>
Click the "Video" tab, set the format to "DVD-Video, enter a DVD name (upper-case only, use _ for spaces), drag the VIDEO_TS folder to Burn's window, then click the "Burn" button (or use "Save Image" from the "File" menu to create a disk image file).
