Green noise is being displayed where black should be being displayed
OK, I am really worried that my Macbook Pro is screwed up bad. I've been playing World of Warcraft fine for weeks. Been watching my temps, been a little high but not anything dangerous. However I've recently been noticing that when I play WoW for over 2 hrs or so and exit, my screen glitches and what can best be described as green static is displayed where black should be. Now I've tried reseting the NVRAM and leaving it alone for a few hrs and it went away. Now it popped up again, did the same thing that fixed it before, but now it won't go away. Did my Mac overheat and now the graphics are messed up?
MacBook Pro (Late 208),
Mac OS X (10.6.2),
4GB of RAM
Just an update. I ran the apple hardware test in extended mode, said it found no errors. So now I might be thinking that is the monitor. Please help me if you can. Thank you in advance.
ok one more update, I've taken the battery out and uplugged the power cord and pressed the power button for 5 secs to reset the NVRAM and PRAM the hard way, and decided to leave the battery out to see if it is an issue. Plugged in power cord, and turned it on, and now it works fine. What in the world is going on?
Are you still under warranty? If so, it would be prudent to report this to Apple and possibly get a case number. It sounds like there could be a hardware problem with the graphics chip, even if nothing showed up on the AHT. Did you run the AHT at a time that you were getting the green noise?
Have you tried an external display? If you get the some problem on it, that would indicate a graphics chip problem. If you don't, there could be some sort of problem with your built in display.
I did the AHT when the green noise was happening and during the test, there was green noise too. I don't have the display port adapter, but I'll try to get one and see. Right now there isn't a problem, but the one thing that is strange is that the GPU diode isn't reporting a temperature anymore. could it have gone out. I'll call Apple and get a case going. I just wanted to try this first before I sent it out to Cupertino and not get it back for a few weeks as it is also my work machine.
It's interesting that the GPU diode no longer reports a temperature, and this could be related to the problem you are having. Very likely the cure will be to replace the logic board.
Apple may get your Mac back to you sooner than you think. My niece sent her Mac off on a Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM, and had it back the following Thursday morning.
