Desktop Icons are stacked on top of each other on startup

Question

Desktop Icons are stacked on top of each other on startup

I turned on my MacBook today and all the desktop icons were stacked on top of each other in the upper left corner of the screen. I put the icons back in their correct places and i restarted and the icons were stacked again, this time in the center of the screen. Any ideas?

Macbook 3,1, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Desktop prefs....Show View Options... Check for proper grid spacing and icon size.

sounds like either your finder preferences or the .DS_store file for the desktop are messed up. run the following terminal commands


osascript -e 'tell application "finder" to quit'
rm ~/library/preferences/com.apple.finder.plist ~/desktop/.DS_Store
osascript -e 'tell application "finder" to activate'
