Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640 Drive draws too much power in a MacBookPro

I just received a Western Digital 640 gb (WD6400BEVT) Scorpio Blue Drive for my MacBookPro. I've noticed that the drives "Throttles" a lot, i.e. seems to accelerate/spin and slow down/stop in a way I've never seen in any other drive, and I've been through lots. It wouldn't be a problem if the computer didn't seem to be sluggish in response, much more sluggish than with the 200G Hitachi drive I had before. I will sometimes start typing something and the computer will be slow to react; I also see the spinning ball much more often.
I contacted WD and was told that "It is quite possible that the computer cannot manage the capacity and energy demand of this drive. If the previous drive was under 250 GB, a 640 GB drive will encounter these issues."
I'd never hear of this problem, and I'm really confused since the new drive has a lower rated energy requirement (it's a 5400 rpm vs 7200) than the previous drive. Has anyone else had these problems? Can someone tell me whether this is reality or obfuscation on the part of Western Digital?

This issue is really making me tear my hair out. I just can't believe it is this difficult to get an upgrade hard drive to work properly.

I thought that I was safe buying a Scorpio Blue 500GB, but I could never imagine the can of worms that this has created.

I am really starting to question whether I did the right thing switching to Mac about 2 years ago. The latest update to 10.6.3 has now stuffed two of my printers (Samsung CLP300 and Samsung SCX 4200). It just seems like one issue after another.

Originally I had applied the hdapm trick which seemed to have solved my issues, but about a week ago I noticed my hard drive "spinning down" again, and performance was decreased. I just checked my load cycle count and it was over 40,000! Not only that, but the cycle count was going up by 1 every 5 seconds or so. Verified that hdapm was still running, and it was.

Just used brianmay27's EFI downgrade method, and I am happy to report that the load cycle count has stopped going up, and performance has returned to normal. I don't know where I'd be without this thread. I was wondering if I had to buy a new hard drive, but I think I'm safe for now.

BTW, is there any way to disable the HDAPM? I want to see if I can just get by with the EFI downgrade.

Same problem here, only that my HD is 320GB one.

During daily use (safari, itunes, finder) after clicking on something, the drive first spins, then the computer reacts - it takes it a second or two. It's extremely annoying. And worse, the guys over at macrumors have said that their computers have become faster ever since.

Is Apple aware of this?
