Quark XPress 8.12 NOT WORKING in 10.6.2

I had just went through 2 hours of customer service with Quark XPress (version 8.12) only to find out that Quark is not compatible with 10.6.2

The issue is when you go to active your version of the software… it quits out.

I was told that there developers are working on the problem, but I received no date in which it will be resolved.

I know that InDesign is better, but I still have clients out there that use Quark.

If anyone has a work around to my Quark issue… I am all ears.

Hmmm, Quark explicitly states in their forums:

If you are planning to upgrade to *Snow Leopard* (aka Mac OS X 10.6) or *Windows 7*:

*_QuarkXPress 8_*

QuarkXPress 8 is officially supported under

Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard),
Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard),
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger),
Windows 7,
Windows Vista and
Windows XP.

*_QuarkXPress 8 and Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6)_*

Please make sure that you use _at least_ Mac OS X 10.6. 2 when using Type-1 fonts with QuarkXPress.

Are you by any chance Jim, aka "Goodfella" on the Quark Forums? If not, there's someone there also experiencing your exact problem (alas, it's also unresolved there):

http://forums.quark.com/t/22379.aspx

At least looking at that log, it appears Quark is doing something stupid:

0 com.quark.QuarkXPress 0x00ba24cb IORegistryReaderX::itoa(long long, char*) + 85
1 com.quark.QuarkXPress 0x00ba2829 IORegistryReaderX::AppendToString(void const*, std::string&) + 201
2 com.quark.QuarkXPress 0x00ba2aed IORegistryReaderX::GetHwParameter(char const*, __CFString const*, std::string&) + 137

Looks like they're passing a bad pointer (probably NULL) to their itoa() routine…

Hello.
I am Jim aka "Goodfella" and created the post on the Quark forum that William is referring to, and I am also having a huge issue with Quark activation. I spent 2 hours chatting online with a Quark tech with no solution. I called customer service today and they acknowledged that there is a technical issue with Quark activation and 10.6.2. They say to run Quark in evaluation mode until they find a solution.

It's not just Quark 8.12 by the way; I cannot open 7.31, 7.5, or 8.0. All crash at the activation screen.

Out of desperation, I erased the hard drive and reinstalled the system from the DVD, (which turns out to be system 10.6), installed Quark, and still could not get Quark to activate. So the issue is not limited to Quark 8.x, nor is it limited to 10.6.2. I hope they get this resolved soon because, other than this issue, my MacBook Pro is running great.

I'll keep you posted if I get any information.

I migrated from 10.5.8 to 10.6.0 on my works iMac. Now on 10.6.2.

The only problem with your theory is that Quark registers the hardware details of your machine to the installation, if you transfer it from say your G5 to your MacBook it will till require re-activation ;-( Bummer!!!

Because I migrated from another partition on my machine I never had to re activate. (i.e. I still have my 10.5.8 partition just in case)

No harm in trying, but I seem to recall having issues is moving quark to different machines in the past.

Hello sk1975,
I am having the exact same issue - including 2-hours chatting with Quark tech support. Can I ask you: did you install a Full Version of Quark 8.12, or is it an upgrade from a previous version?

Thanks, Jim

Hi, all,

as I am quoted here, please allow me to comment on this.

We currently know of a handful of people who have issues with activation that we cannot solve with standard techsupport practises.

Jim was one of them, he exchanged his hardware and could then activate without any problem.

We have thousands of customers using QuarkXPress 8.12 on Snow Leopard, so I doubt there's a general issue. I am using the same combination at home (with an activation based QuarkXPress).

We are working with all customers to resolve the activation issues and find out, whether there's a common theme. If there is, we will post the result in our forums at http://forums.quark.com.

If you are experience such an issue, please contact our technical support at http://support.quark.com/chat/ or shoot me an email, I'll gladly connect you.

Best regards

I could not migrate from my old machine because it was a Power PC.

I installed 8.02 first and it tanked, I then did the update and it tanked. I then went through technical support and they had me delete everything and download 8.12 right from them, and that tanked. I went through every trouble shooting think you can think of with them for over 2 hours.

I was then informed after the 7th call and 7th time of deleting and re installing… that Quark is aware of the issue and working on it. I was told by the technician, that I would be informed by email when the issue is resolved.

I am not surprised that I am having this issue with Quark… after all, when OS X first came out… Quark had a very difficult time getting a working version to work on OS X and infact had to have Apple developers help them out to get Quark working on the OS X platform

No date huh? then sit on your thumb and do nothing, if they cant figure out the solution then give me my $800 back and have a nice day.
Thats a great attitude to have with the people who use your software and pay your salary by purchasing your software.

I have done plenty of work with large printing companies and they HATE the attitude from Quark. Half the time Quark does not even send out a Rep or technician to discuss any possible resolutions to fix the problems the software is having. Thats why more people everyday are switching to InDesign.

Like I said, keep up that attitude… your doing a great job of turning people away.

Mister Matthias Günther

I would love any help to resolve my Quark issue. I have been on the phone for several hours trying to resolve my Quark issue and have no success in resolving the activation of my copy. Is there any way that I could talk to you directly to resolve the problem? or is there someone in particular there at Quark that can walk me through the activation process?

I thank you very much for your time

Hi, sk1975,

I am a bit puzzled by your two posts, your response to Allan was about the attitude of Quark, which I work for and he does not. Was this just a mix up?

Of course I can try help fix the problem you are experiencing. And of course you can contact me. As I am not techsupport or R&D I doubt I can personally fix it, but I am sure I can find somebody who can fix it.

Regards
Matthias

This is not the first time I have had issues with installing the software from Quark. This is the only software I have ever had so many issues with.

It usually takes days sometimes months to get a resolution.

The problem with that is when you are trying to work on a project with a deadline, I am finding out that InDesign may be the only way to go. Dont get me wrong, I like Quark, thats what I started on, but there have been so many issues with the activation, transferring of the license on another machine and software compatibility… that it kills the entire experience of trying to do any work with Quark.

I have been on the Chat Support for Quark and they have no solution to my issue of Activating Quark XPress 8.12 on 10.6.2

I dont know what else to say to you Mister Matthias, I am trying here
