Magicolor 3100 printing under 10.6 via Ethernet

Can anyone help me to get my magicolor 3100 to work under 10.6 through Ethernet? It worked fine under 10.5, but I cannot even find it under 10.6 (surely a backward step for an Apple) and entering the IP address does nothing to help. I am just a user, not a computer expert and, hitherto, Apple functionality has always been geared to ease of use.
The set-up is a 2008 iMac Dual Core, a D-Link fast Ethernet switch and the printer. The set-up allows printing from other (G5) iMacs running 10.5, which are unaffected by the problem. Installing 10.6 on the Dual Core dumped the printer driver, which cannot be reinstalled in the correct place (the en.lproj folder does not exist in 10.6 and cannot be created under Resources in the Library).
Konica Minolta advise that there is no driver for the printer under 10.6 and none is envisaged, so at the moment I look like reverting to 10.5 to be able to use my system. That is hardly progress, so can anyone suggest a solution to the problem?

This is not an Apple issue but one with the printer's manufacturer. Apple does not make printer drivers. The drivers distributed with OS X are supplied by the printer manufacturers. It would appear that the manufacturer has told you they will not support the driver for Snow. You can either return to Leopard or buy a new printer that is compatible.

I have the disc, as well as the 'latest' version of the PPD driver, but 10.6 simply won't allow me to install it in the correct place (as recommended by Minolta). As a result, the printer remains invisible to to the Add printer option in 10.6. It is ironic that as Microsoft have produced Windows 7, addressing many the long-term criticisms of their OS, Apple have produced 10.6, which introduces the same sort of problems (hence 121 pages of 10.6 printer and peripheral problems and counting).

Hi!

It can be done (unfortunately I am around 600 km away from the machine that contains the correct settings).

Ask someone with in-depth knowledge about CUPS and cupsd on Mac OS X 10.6.

Background info: These [insert swear word of your liking here] engineers at Konica decided that Appletalk is THE print protocol for Macs. HOWEVER Apple dropped Appletalk printing with 10.6. This is the reason you cannot print to Magicolor 3100 with 10.6 out of the box.

To get the Magicolor 3100 working the CUPS guru has to:
- Make sure your Magicolor 3100 is set up for IP printing (see the CROWN parameters on the settings printout)
- Copy the Magicoler drivers from an 10.5.8 machine to the same folder on the 10.6 machine
- Create a new LPD printer in CUPS (using a browser pointed to the address http://localhost:631/ )
- Switch the LPD printer to RAW transfer
- Select the printer driver you copied earlier for the new printer
- Try to print a test page on the Magicolor 3100.

This cannot be done without direct access to CUPSd - http://localhost:631

Contact me next year if you need the precise settings for the CUPS printer. I will try to contact my long-distance-friend to send you a screenshot.

Cheers,
Walter

Walter,
Many thanks. I had been forced to press the red button (ie return to 10.5, which meant I spent a day reinstalling everything and copying/moving files that were previously on 10.6), as I had a job that needed the printer. However, I have 10.6 on another partition, so I'll set about doing as you suggest. If it gets me talking to the printer again, then I will reinstall 10.6 on the 10.5 partition. I knew there had to be a way, but if I get stuck, I'll contact you in the New Year.
Regards,
JP

Can anyone help me in assigning 'RAW transfer' to the LPD printer?

I have successfully 'added' my 3100 through CUPS, but when I send a file (including a test page) to print, all I get is a page with my name at the top (lower case, in large bold type), 'magicolor 3100' at a 45º angle (in a 60% grey), with 'user, host and file' at the bottom left.

Do I assign 'RAW transfer' in the CUPS application, at the printer or in some other step of the procedure?

Any comment(s) or help would be appreciated.

Bob

Hi, this is how I solved the problem.

Go here http://printer.konicaminolta.com/support/currentprinters/mc3100sup.htm and download the PPD installer for Mac OS X 10.1 and later and install it.

Add a printer in the usual way,

Protocol: LDP
Address: IP of printer
Queue: xxx
Print Using: Select Printer Software. Type in Minolta and you'll see the 3100

It's the xxx that makes it all work, no idea why. I used the same settings in Windows so thought I'd try it. This is my first Mac, I thought they just worked 😉

I am still having difficulty. Does the ip address appear as - lpd://192.etc.etc.etc/xxx or is 'ps' in place of the 'xxx' ? And, did you set up the printer using CUPS or through the System Preferences?

I have gotten the printer to operate using a USB cable attached to an Airport Express, but I would rather move that Express back to my audio system for use with iTunes. I know I could buy an additional Airport Express, but $99 is $99.

Thanks for your help,
Bob

Hi Biodiesel
not sure I can help but I didn't meet the problems you appear to be having 😟

First set an IP address in the printer menu system as described in the Magicolor manual (beware it resets each time you switch off ... so don't switch off !)

Then all I did was click on add printer,
click on the IP tab at the top of the add printer dialog.
Set the protocol to LPD.
Type the IP address you've set into the address box
type "xxx" in the queue line
then wait for the address to show it is valid
In the 'print using' drop down menu choose "select printer software"
a box appears ... start typing minolta and if the printer ppd is in the correct place it will appear in the available printers list. click on the 3100, then OK.
Finally click the add button at the bottom right of the window and hey presto its done.

Remember if you switch off or have a power outage your printer will probably loose the IP you set. ?Simply reset in the printer and all will be well

You can set any printer options such as bins etc from the options dialog once the printer is in the printer list

hope this helps
