ipod shuffle not working

I just got a broken iPod Shuffle from a friend. Right now it will not show up my computer or charge. The light on it doesn't even turn on when it is plugged in. The cable is new and the usb works fine with my other iPod. I was wondering if anyone else has run into a similar problem and has some possible solutions.

When you say "cable", do you mean the shuffle's dock? Or something else?

I am referring to the USB cable that plugs into the ipod from the computer.

A 2nd gen shuffle came with a dock with an audio plug to which the shuffle was mated. Attached to the dock was a cable with a USB connector at the end of it
to connect to a computer or charger.

What's the "USB cable" you refer to look like?

This usb cable plugs into the regular port into my computer and plugs into the audio port on iPod Shuffle. Do you have to have a dock for the shuffle to sync and charge?

IF that "cable" is actually for the 3rd gen shuffle (which fits the description),
IT WON'T WORK. IF, on the other hand, it's some third party product... Well...
There ARE some dock replacements:
