A Mouse That Scrolls --- Reliably?

Has anyone found a reliable replacement for the Mighty Mouse?

I find the scroll ball of the Mighty Mouse to be an exercise in utter futility: requiring repetitive attempts at cleaning (with no tangible means of ascertaining how well the exercise has met with success).

Any replacement that WORKS would be welcomed!

Did you give up on the Mighty Mouse because of the erratic scroll ball?

Yes. Also, because my fingers were constantly straying to the wrong side of mouse by a hair. Two main buttons separated by a scroll wheel stops my random finger misbehavior.

I'd be quite interested in acquiring either of the current Logitechs. Any specific model?

I'd look at them all and choose the one that fits your hand and your purposes best.

Are you recommending the Magic Mouse over the Logitech? Reports that I've read are that the scroll function remains problematical with the Magic Mouse.

Not here...it is great fun using the MagicMouse for all tasks, including scrolling, paging, zooming and the ever staid clicking as well. Go to your nearest Apple Store and test for yourself 🙂

I actually find scrolling the best thing about Magic Mouse. You scroll in all directions, with ease and control.

It has no mechanical wheel to get dirty or stop working or even make noise.

The only drawback is the lack of middle click.

I still agree with other posters that you should try it out first. I bought it from Apple Store to try it for a while and then decided to keep it.

On whichever Apple mouse you end up using, you could simply disable the secondary button click and use Control-Click instead. That's what I did on my old Mighty Mouse and have ended up doing on my new Magic Mouse (which I really like, by the way). I really don't find using the Control key along with a mouse click inconvenient at all. It makes using the mouse a lot easier and I don't get any spurious behavior from the Magic Mouse as a result.

Actually I said that.

That is precisely what I'm trying to avoid. I use an application all day long that has a ton of context menu items. Also, have you ever tried control-click with a phone in one hand? 😉

Not practical, I can well imagine. But for those who don't need three or more arms 😉 using the control click method certainly solves the problem of accidentally clicking on the secondary with either Mighty or Magic mouse.

BTW I DID find the Magic Mouse less prone to accidentally fire off the right click than the Mighty Mouse. Maybe you should give one a try at Apple sometime and check this out for yourself. It might work well enough for you.

I really do like the scroll function with momentum and two finger lateral swipe on this mouse. Scrolling seems so much more natural for me and the ability to flip browser pages back and forth with the two finger swipe motion seems so natural.

Cheers,

Rick
