Why is my firewall off?

I bought my first Mac, an iMac running Snow Leopard (V.10.6.2) 6 days ago and have just discovered that the firewall is turned off. Why?

iMAC, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Come and listen to a story 'bout a man named Buzz
Poor XP geek always kept his Anti-virus fed
Then one day he was deleting e-mail spam,
And up through Outlook come a blue screen of death
(A new virus it was, so the Anti-virus failed, toasted the HD)

Well the first thing you know old Buzz's a screaming
Kin folk said Buzz move away from Windows
Said OS X is the place that your XP oughta be
So I loaded up my Glock and blew that virus away
(Emptied 20 rounds, loved it, best day of my life)

Well now it's time to say goodbye to Windows and all it's kin
I would like to thank that virus for kindly dropping in
You're all invited back again to send new ones to me
So have a heaping helping trying to infect my new PC
(Symantec All-In-One Security, that's what they call 'em now,
Do not believe them now, ya hear?)

Gosh! My simple question has generated a fascinating discussion. When I discovered the firewall was turned off I turned it on (I'm used to using a firewall on my Windows XP computers. The comment about routers implies I could turn the firewall off, but sharing has been mentioned as a complication. I have file sharing with my Windows XP laptop (and I've been trying, so far without success, to set upprinter sharing). _*So should I keep the firewall if I'm sharing files on my local network through a router?*_

Please note I'm an Apple newbie!

Hey willjm
Please note I'm an Apple newbie!

That's OK. Newbies to OS X are unsure about stuff so Apple Discussions is a good place to start.

If haven't discovered this option yet it will shorten your learning curve quickly. That's a short cut to Mac's built in Help & displays info about the open window options. For more info, click Home in Help. Still need more info, just type it into Help's question box to search Apples Articles & Discussions web for links to even more Info.
And I've been trying, so far without success, to set upprinter sharing.

Open System Preference, select Sharing then click the Help button. 🙂 Post back if you still need help.
BTW: I captured this picture of my Firewall using keyboard short-cuts without using Grab, modified & changed to a .gif with Preview plus saved it straight to my iDisk in minutes.

Buzz,

You said post back if I need help. There is a thread, ( http://discussions.apple.com/post!reply.jspa?messageID=1069701) entitled "Printer sharing on Windows XP", on my printer sharing problem on the Installation & Set up discussion. I've got as far as getting a printer status window which shows the print job and the word "printing' is displayed, but nothing happens. It has baffled several contributors, and the Apple Helpline expert concluded our discussion with the comment "must be a windows problem".

No problem.
I've got as far as getting a printer status window which shows the print job and the word "printing' is displayed, but nothing happens.

Disable both firewalls & try printing again. If it prints, the firewalls need configuring but if it doesn't leave them of of now, then check this stuff ...
Don't use smb://DNSname/sharename that requires DNSname to IPaddress lookup but use smb://IPaddress/sharename instead. Passwords for Windows computers are most often 14 characters or less but use 8 or less. Don't use these characters in the printer or computer names only with passwords: !, $, *, (, ), _, "+", -, ‘, and . (period).
Printer Drivers & Bonjour up to date on both.
Then try printing again.

Post back with the results.

It has baffled several contributors, and the Apple Helpline expert concluded our discussion with the comment "must be a windows problem".

At least the contributors didn't repeat what the Apple Helpline said.

Why is my firewall off?
