How to teach the spell checker

How can I teach the spell checker to suggest the word "für" for the word "fuer"? This would be for the German language.

System Preferences/Language & Text/Text..Symbol & Text Substitution...use the '+' button below to add your own.

Yes the text substitution works but I would prefer not to turn that feature on.

Other ideas?

AFAIK, there is no way to force spellchecker to offer a particular word when it sees a particular miss-spelling. it uses its own built in algorithm for that. you can teach the spellchecker to learn some words and it will will then offer them as options when it thinks it's appropriate.
