We just arrived in Rome and our phones are showing "No Service". We have interenet connectivity when we hook up to our hotel wifi, but no telephone service.
You would have needed to contact AT&T before you left and have them activate 'international provisioning' on your iPhone, else you cannot use a non-AT&T network for voice or data. If you didn't do that before you left, call them now (from a different phone, obviously!). The number is +1-916-843-4685.
Oh, I forgot to say that we live in Seattle and this is the first time we have been to Europe since we got our iPhones. They have worked just fine for several trips to Canada, but they aren't working in Italy.
When we bought the phones it was on the condition that they worked all over the world. We were assured that they did. After a couple of weeks owning the phone I called again to confirm that they were set up for international calls. I was again told that they were and they did something on their end and said, shut off your phone and turn it back on and it will be completely ready to go in Europe.

the phone is capable of working all over the world but if you don't have an international calling plan set up with at&t then it won't work. the phone is also capable of letting you use internet applications but if you don't have a data plan then you can't get online.
it's not an issue with the phone, it's an issue with the plan associated with the phone. your plan clearly isn't set up to be used in europe.
Thanks, wjosten. I didn't purchase a specific roaming package for Italy, but last week when we were in Whislter, B.C., Canada, we were able to use the roaming feature so I thought we were just fine.
Have you tried your phones elsewhere? I suppose it's possible that No Service means just that, i.e. everything is fine with your account, you just aren't in range of a network.
I wish it were that easy, neuroanatomist, but the phones are showing several carriers available, and a guy who was on the shuttle with us had service on his phone.
Note that even if you called them before, and were told 'everything is all set' - clearly, it's not. So, call them back - they are the only ones who can help you out in this situation.
