iPod touch 2G or iPod touch 3G ?

Is the current line-up of iPod touch available in 8GB, 32GB and 64GB the 2nd Generation or the 3rd Generation? While Apple says nothing about it being the 3rd Generation, iLounge keeps talking about it as the 3rd Generation. I am a bit confused when I am trying to buy accessories for my new iPod touch...

 15" MacBook Pro 2.33Ghz, 3GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 256MB VRAM, Mac OS X (10.6.2),  iPod touch 32GB (Late 2009)

iPods bought new today will be the current version, i.e. 3rd gen

if you buy a refurbished unit, it will be indicated

Sorry to ressurect this thread, but it seems to be asking the same as I am when looking into buying an ipod touch.

I have read a great many things and posts about the newest (Sept 2009) versions of the ipod touch being the "3rd Generation" but on the Apple website it does not refer to them as such. I suppose it is just a name, but I do worry if a true 3rd Generation is on it's way.

I suppose the answer is just to buy one when I decide I really want it, and forget about the name that Apple or others give it :P

Lightfooter:
i don't know about other 'generations', but it does seem that apple don't refer to the newest ipod touches as third gens.

however, it isn't really as you say 'just a name': the september release was the third release of ipod touch, with each release seeing differences to the hardware - if you look around the www, all the 'tecchy' websites will refer to it as the third gen, as do most electrical goods shops that are selling them.
people are merely adopting the rules applied to any other ipod update, each time a new one is released it is described as the next generation.

the next ipod touch release, if/when it comes will be the 4th Generation. going on past releases, they usually come in september, but there is no guarantee.

thing with technology, there is always going to be something new and better about to be released, and often it will be just after you've decided to buy the current version.

Yep, I suppose it's a wait and see situation .. I have a working ipod nano (2nd Gen) that still suits my music needs for now (although I could do with more capacity), so I'm probably willing to wait and see what might happen during the year.

You might be right that Apple will have to call any new model the 4th Generation (or the communities will), because it could cause a huge amount of confusion on all the forums etc. that have already coined that name for the late 2009 version.

Apple does refer to the newer iPod Touch (iTouch to some) but not "specifically" as 3G:

http://support.apple.com/specs/#ipod

Many reviews online or from magazine do refer to the newer, current iTouch versions as the 3G version (simply making it easier to compare with the newer iPhone 3GS but without the "S").

If you look at the specifics, the 2G and 3G (also stated from other online websites) are almost identical physically, mostly different in software and 2 slight external features to distinguish between the 2 models:

1. Logo on back on 3G model is smaller
2. There are 2 text lines below the logo on 3G version vs 4-5 text lines on the 2G version.

I own both 2G and 3G iTouches and don't notice any other external differences except the 2 mentioned above by other reviewers.

Basically, you can buy whatever accessories for the 2G version as it should be compatible with the 3G version as well.

I believe the current iPod Touch 8 GB is not the third generation processor nor does it have the microphone-equipped headphones. Only the current 32GB and 64 GB model are so equipped. However, they all have OS 3.x installed.

Technically correct. There were no major changes to the 8 GB model.

Although there are 8 GB models that are "2nd Gen" and newer 8 GB models that are "Late 2009" (3rd).

I own an IPOD 32gb 3g version (or late 2009) I am looking at purchasing a car entertainment system that claims to be compatible with IPOD touch 2g, but not 3g. I spoke with a tech on the manufacturers website and he said that the only reason its listed as incompatible is that it has not been tested. Is there any chance of this NOT working? thanks!

Most likely any issue would be with the version 3.1.2 of the iPod software which comes pre-installed in all the 3rd Gens.

Ask them if their system was tested with a 2nd Gen *running the latest revision 3.1.2*. If yes, then the 3rd Gen will work just the same.

iPod touch 2G or iPod touch 3G ?
