Should I care about a dead pixel?

I don't blame you. I haven't seen any dead pixels in the normal use of my new i7 and I'm not going to go looking for them! If there are some that I don't notice in normal use and I find them, My eyes will be consistently drawn to them.

You will find that many displays have one or two dead pixels, and this is considered normal. Apple will not replace a display with one dead pixel. See, About LCD display pixel anomalies.

I have heard that if you put your clean finger on it and gently massage it it will sometimes come back. Sort of a CPR thing I guess. No long finger nails though.

You are correct, that only works on G-5's and 2006 Intel iMac's with a soft matte display screen. The iMac's after 2007 have a glass panel over the display that would need to be removed before the area could be carefully massaged.

If the pixel is black then there's a good chance that it is dead, but if it is just stuck on a color you might get it going by using Pixel Fix or the JScreenFix applet.

What is the easiest way to find a dead pixel? Seems my 27" has a whole ____ of a lot of pixels. ;-0

Yes replace it, I did, I'm on my 2nd replacement atm. Both my new i7 iMac's had dead pixels =_=. . . now I'm playing the waiting game again so they can repair it.

Whether it's 'considered normal' by Apple or not is irrelevant. They only state this knowing that it will put some people off from doing anything about it. As it's perfectly possible for Apple to produce a Mac without dead pixels, there's no reason to accept anything less. Everyone pays their hard-earned money to buy a new Mac. It isn't a lottery as to whether you get a flawless display or not. If I get a perfect example and yours comes with dead pixels, wouldn't you expect yours to have the same level of quality as mine? Would you be happy knowing it was possible to have a dead-pixel-free display but got the next one off the production line? Whether you use your 14 day 'cooling off' period to return your Mac due to dead pixels, and here in the UK we pay no restocking fee, or whether you insist on a replacement instead is up to you. You are entitled to receive a fully working machine and that includes ALL the pixels.

I put the entire screen to white on my I7, no dots or discolored pixels. Not sure about the test for dead pixels...
