I am trying to recover a Themes file from inside my old iWeb application on my pre-migration MacBook Pro backup, however, in Time Machine the all pre-migration backups for the MacBook pro are shown on the right, but are grayed out and not accessible. Only backups of the new computer since the migration are available.

Also, after migrating from the old MacBook Pro to new iMac, I chose the Time Machine option to continue the original Time Capsule backup from the previous MacBook Pro. I have tried Migration Assistant, but it does not let me just access the old backups.

How do I access the previous MacBook Pro backups on my Time Capsule from my new computer?

iMac 27", Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Chuck, a couple od things come to mind...

First, when you click on the TM Dock icon and enter the Time Machine interface, do you see icons for both Macs under Devices on the left? Clicking on different items in this area can light up the grayed out backups.

Second, do you see your TC icon in the Sidebar of your Finder window? Click on it. Next double-click the blue Share folder to open it. Your TCs HD will mount on the Desktop. Then mount the backup disk image by double-clicking it. It too should now appear on your desktop. Now, from the TM Dock Icon select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks...". Accessing it this way may give you more options to get at your old data. Just remember to Eject both disks from your Desktop later.

Finally, do your still have the old Mac? Or perhaps a different Mac? You might be able use the same steps described above with one of them with better results. Let us know if this was helpful. Cheers!

When I browse other Time Machine Disks, only the current backup of the new iMac shows as a choice. This may be because I opted to "continue" the old backup in the new computer. When I enter TM and click on the Device icon of the new iMac computer, the all of the ticks on the right (new and old) do light up, but when I click on a pre-migration date tick, all of the Places on the Sidebar then gray out and I cannot get to them. If I click on a post-migration date tick, the Places stay light up and I can recover any data. So I guess the new and old backups are on the dame dick, I just need a way to get back into the old backup mode so to speak.

The TC disk is mounted on the Sidebar and the backups of the old computer are shown there in folders.

A strange thing now, now my TM clock that spins backward in the top right corner of the menu bar is grayed out, but still performs, backups still function. What does that indicate?

    No worries—Chuck

Chuck, when you first started the new Mac, did you migrate over your old user account from thr TM backup, or did ou create a new user account? If so, the system may think you don't have right to access that data as you are not the same user.

As for the greyed out icon - that usually means TM has been turned OFF in the TM Preferences.

Good question. I send the Migration Assistant to migrate from my old MacBook Pro to the new iMac via Ethernet. TM started on the new iMac and asked me if I wanted to start a new backup or continue the old one. I figured that since I had just migrated the entire user and places to the new computer I should continue with the same backup. I did not anticipate that it would not let me into old backups. The Migration moved everything except fine stuff such as custom Themes within iWeb. One application with in the iLife suite may have needed to be reloaded so I reloaded the quite which may have been the cause of writing over the old iWeb, so now I am just trying to go back and get the theme out of the old iWeb so to speak.

Your comments so far have been very useful. Thanks—

Chuck, forgive the spelling in the previous post. It was from my iPhone while I was out.

If you are actually logged into the very same account that existed on your old Mac, then I'm not sure why you can't get at the old backups. That scenario has worked just fine for me in the past.

That is a perfectly reasonable assumption, particularly now that Mac OSX permits you to do that - which was not the case before Snow Leopard. As I said, there is some reason the system thinks that is another users data and won't let you at it (Am I correct in assuming that the MBP is now gone?).

Do you have any other accounts setup on the new Mac? Have you tried logging into one of them, mounting the TM backup disk image and then "Browse Other Backup Disk..."?

Ya I had a typo too.

Anyway, I have just the one account that the Migration Assistant moved over for me. It is interesting, everything appears to have been moved and is functioning properly. They data is still there I believe. The ticks in TM are there and the windows are there in the Star Wars view. haha.

There are two backups seen by the Migration Assistant. Mine and a one time backup of a friend's computer. Since it was one time, it would not show up a many backup dates as the additional dates I see grayed out in TM on the right.
