Printer 'offline'?

My hp laserjet p1006 won't print and the error message says "printer offline". The printer is not showing up in System Profiler. The printer is on, and connected via USB. Ready light on printer is on. I tried different USB ports (eliminating the hub) and switched out the USB cable. Restarted computer and printer, updated driver and repaired disk permissions. I recently switched to Snow Leopard but the printer has printed since I switched numerous times.

I can't think of anything except something is wrong with the printer hardware itself but perhaps someone can help me. Don't know how to go about tracking down the problem. Can help?
