DVD drive scratching discs.

Anyone else noticing this?
Got a brand new iMac 27" i5.
Multiple discs have gone in & had issues reading... they come out with a circle scratched all the way around. Checked with freshly burned discs with no problems on other macs but when they go into the iMac they come out scratched & often now unusable in any system.

There were two types of scratches being made

(1) more or less straight/slightly wavy lines (lots of them)
(2) complete circles

Took it back to the store & got a replacement system immediately since they were aware of the issue but it isn't restricted to the new imacs since the problem is the optical drive.

This was a week 46 system as is its replacement which so far appears in good order.

I've also noticed scratching on my 27" iMac, although I think I know what the problem is... Depending on how you are inserting the disc into the drive, you may be inadvertently hitting the very sharp inner aluminum edges of the optical drive slot. If you are getting multiple parallel scratches across your discs, this may be the cause for you.

Still planning on taking my machine into Apple tomorrow to let them know of this problem. I've ruined three discs in the last few days and just ruined a 4th one to confirm what I've found.

I thought I was losing my mind, or doing something wrong. My I-Mac 27" has serious issues with the DVD drive. I'll be calling for warranty tomorrow. Three months old, and almost $3000.00 invested. Not happy at all. I expected a bit more from Apple at this price. I guess I'll be sucked in for the extra cost of extended warranty after this event.

Like someone already said, Toyota put out a recall, I'd expect a company like apple to at least put out a notice alerting customers of a potential problem. Wasting so much time, as might as well have bought a PC again.

I can actually hear my drive jamming and grinding to a halt. I wasted a day and a half trying to figure out the problem.

Cheers.

We discovered the issue with scratched disks after 10.6 experienced some serious problems with a Helvetica Nueue font, at which point we tried wiping the system installing 10.5. When our IT people couldn't get 10.5 to work, we tried 10.4, only to find out that the brand new, 2700 dollar 27" iMac decimated both disks.

The fact that Apple considers this user error and not a real issue with the hardware is insulting. A year and a half ago, my brand new 24" iMac had to be returned and eventually replaced with a newer model, and I've had numerous issues with battery swelling on my Mac Book Pro. Now this problem, which comes with an extra kick to the butt, considering I had a "genius" tell me to be more careful about inserting my disks. Guess what, Genius? I've been inserting disks in older iMacs the same way for 2 years, and never had an issue with scratching.

I have been an avid supporter of Apple since I started in the design industry 13 years ago, but lately, due to the increasing shoddiness of the products and the level of humiliation and condescension I experience at the genius bar, I'm seriously considering wiping my hands of the brand and buying a PC. At least I can anticipate the crashing issues, and buy an external drive for regular backup.

Has anyone got to the bottom of this and been able to resolve this yet?

I got in touch with Apple tech team and it is really surprising that this is NOT A KNOWN issue! I will be calling my apple store today, but am not too optimistic.

This is typical of any brand (historically speaking). Great prods, great service, great profits leading to pride and arrogance to ultimately loss of market share and customer satisfaction. Apple needs to respond to legitimate issues.
