Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II color issues

I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing problems with the Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II and printing accurate color? I am fully color managed, but under Snow Leopard can not for the life of me get an accurate color print. I have tried the Easy Print Pro app, I have tried setting everything manually myself, I have re-profiled my screen, done custom profiles on papers and still am hitting a dead end. Everything is flat (lacking contrast), too bright, and the shadows seem to be too red/magenta.

The printer is aligned correctly, has no clogged heads, I am using real Canon ink, the most current drivers, and prior to Snow Leopard had absolutely awesome results from this printer...

Using a Colormunki, I am also using a type 2 profile instead of type 4 since there is issues with type 4's under 10.6 apparently.

Any assistance is welcomed.

No assistance, I'm afraid. But I have the same setup as you describe, and am experiencing similar trouble. Prints from both LR3-beta and Aperture exhibit the same problems. Specifically,

-- prints on Canon Pro Platinum PT-101 glossy (using the Canon-supplied profile) are are too dark, and have a magenta cast;

-- prints on same with ColorMunki custom profile (ICC version 4) are way off. e.g., white border prints with a gray-blue cast;

-- prints on same with ICC version 2 profiles have very poor shadow resolution, but color is somewhat better.

Have you made any progress? Cheers,

The most common cause of such troubles may be double-profiling. I think that it's very likely you have checked for this, but are you quite certain that you have turned off color management in the printer driver and are managing color through Light Room or Aperture?

I have spent hours trying to understand this and am tired and confused. I get the same magenta-shifted colour on prints in Aperture and worse in Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac. I have not tried it in Photoshop CS4 yet because I'm trying to get the simple stuff to work first. My problem is I must use the application to manage colour because that is the only option that allows me to set the ICC printer profile for the Ilford paper I am using on the Canon Pro9500 Mark II I bought yesterday. If I let the printer manage colour, I can't tell it about the Ilford ICC printer profile. I do not understand how I can modify the printer driver as so many posts reference changes but do not seem to say how you do that. Wish I didn't feel so stupid about this; life was easier before I bought the fancy printer!

All Canon software is the latest version. I'm currently on Leopard but will be on Snow Leopard when my next iMac arrives.

There is a known issue with PSE6 where the images are double color managed. This has been mentioned in the past on this forum and the Adobe forums.

To quote Kurt Lang's reply to a postee on the Leopard forum who was having the same problem with PSE6.

The Photoshop Elements team are aware of the problem and are working with Apple and the printer manufacturers to get this to work correctly. In the meantime, the only workaround is to switch off colour management in Photoshop Elements and let the printer handle the colour management.

When the print dialogue comes up, under the Color Correction heading, change the pull down menu to "ColorSync". In the menu below that, choose the correct profile for the paper you're using. If the Brightness menu is still active, look for any choice that allows you to turn it off. If none exists, leave it on Normal. If the options below that for Color Balance and Intensity are not grayed out, make sure they are at the center positions (no effect).

Before I read your note this morning, I decided to try Canon's Easy-PhotoPrint Pro a try (via the Photoshop Elements Plug-in). It only allows me to specify Canon media so I chose Semi-gloss thinking it was closest to the Ilford Smooth Pearl paper I have. Then I selected, Color Adjustment, Color Management, and input the ICC printer profile supplied by Ilford. All other color settings were not touched as you mentioned. Voila! The print's are fine now. Too bad Ilford's website didn't include a warning that their guidelines don't work with the Mac's version of Photoshop Elements.

I'll also try using the printer dialogue with Elements as you suggested and I'm sure it will produce the same results. But I also think I'll try some Canon paper after I have used up my Ilford to compare output quality; if the Canon paper is fine, it's the simpler route to take.

I suppose this is also a good reason to upgrade to the new Photoshop Elements version 8 for Mac if it's PSE6 that has the problem and not PSE8.

Happy New Year!

I bought a Canon Pixma 9000 MK2 in Dec. and am having serious red/magenta cast problems with it so can't help you but I don't understand the discussion of double profiling. I set my color management in Photoshop CS4 and don't see anywhere along the print chain where there is another place to turn it on. I'm about to give up and return the printer unless I can find a solution to this problem. I have an older ip8500 which prints just fine to my eye (that is the prints are quite close to what I see on my imac 27" screen. Any other thoughts people have that could help would be appreciated.
thanks

I am on day 2 of tweaking output on my 9000 II.

After early success with reasonable (but underwhelming) results, and having gone into lots of different possible workflows, finally tried the Canon Easyprint software plugin for Photoshop.

Oh man, what a difference!

Really good saturation (finally!) accurate darks, and great color rendition.

It also has some very nice tools to print proof sheets with incremental ink changes, to find the best settings to fine adjust for a good match to screenproof.

I am on an uncalibrated iMac (although I ran through the colorsync utility for a custom modification of the Apple settings), and using HP paper, which I had a ton of.

Couldn't be happier!

Just keep reading, you'll find your solution!

I am having similar problems with my 9000 II.
I tried printing from Aperture II as well as Elements. Looks over saturated with magenta.
I varied the printing priorities with similar problems. I am interested in using the Canon Easyprint software plugin for photoshop. This may be a simple procedure but I am not aware of the process. I have the plug in installed. Can you illustrate step by step on how to use the canon easyprint plugin through photoshop elements to print?
Anyone else with solutions to printing directly from ApertureII with correct hue?

thanks
