Time capsule causes Kernel Panic

Brand new 2TB time capsule here. Bridge mode (uses existing internet connection, works as access point plus printer sharing). We have 2 powerbooks G4 with OS-X Tiger plus some Linux machines here in the wireless network. Booted the Powerbooks up and they would crash with Kernel panic - as soon as the login screen appeared. Sometimes they would get over it and crash later. Sometimes they did not crash. However, as soon as we switched off the Time Capsule, plugged in the old WLAN router -- guess what? No more crashes. Powerbooks work as always.

Any takes on that?

PS: We used a Macbook/Leopard to do the initial config of the Time Capsule. All systems are updated. On the Linux machines, we had no probs with Time Capsule (WLAN access point and backup via Samba/cifs)

Powerbook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

I just installed a 1TB Time Capsule and my G4 running 10.4.11 now crashes with a Kernel panic. Rather than an airport card, I was using a Motorola WN825G which had worked fine prior to installing the new Time Capsule. Your result suggests that the problem is not due to the type of wireless receiver card, but rather that something changed in the way the wireless communication works. Please post any information you find.

There is another thread on this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10780662

I just posted the following:

This has turned into a real fiasco. I upgraded to the new time capsule. All the Macs in my house are running 10.6.2, except for an iMac G5 which runs Tiger. The G5 immediately started experiencing kernel panics after I installed the new time capsule. I couldn't imagine it had anything to do with the new Time Capsule, so this morning I brought the iMac G5 to the genius bar. It worked fine there, and the tech didn't think it had anything to do with the new Time Capsule either. Back home, and I had kernel panics again. I check the forums, and sure enough there is an issue between the new dual band Time Capsules and 10.4 Tiger.Apparently the answer is to upgrade the machine to Leopard.

I have a family pack, totally legit, copy of Leopard, so I attempt to install that on the G5 iMac. No dice: keeps telling me the "media is damaged". Back to the forums, sure enough, there's an issue installing Leopard on some older G5's. Som say it's an issue with 3rd party RAM (which I do have), others say it's an issue with the DVD reader in the older G5 iMacs. So now the iMac won't even boot up; I'm guessing because it has a half completed Leopard installation. I would try installing using the super drive in one of my other Macs via target mode, but they have two different types of firewire plugs. Even if I got the correct cable, I'm not sure that would work.

On top of all this, the "genius" at the Apple store said they don't even service these G5's anymore, because they are over 5 years old and now considered "legacy" machines. So now I have one heck of a paper weight! Any ideas?

I have a very similar situation re kernel panics and Time Capsule:

Powerbook G4 with Mac OS 10.4.11
Time Capsule 1TB purchased December 2009

I bought the Time Capsule a few weeks ago. Our newer Macbook Pro with 10.6 works fine. Our older Powerbook G4 became very unstable, and for the first time in its long life began to crash with kernel panics. I erased the operating system, installed a completely new Mac OS 10.4.11, and ran all the software updates. I tested with different RAM. Finally I turned off the new Time Capsule and reverted to my older 802.11g WiFi D-Link base: the Powerbook G4 stopped its kernel panics.

There is a definite correlation between the Time Capsule and the Powerbook G4 with Mac OS 10.4.11 suddenly having kernel panics.

I took my Powerbook G4 to the Apple Store for a Genius Bar consultation. They offered that there may be a remedy by upgrading to Mac OS 10.5, but this was not guaranteed. The only certain remedy was to return my Time Capsule for a refund.

This situation is quite annoying: I bought the Time Capsule to help prevent problems by use of an automatic back up approach, but instead it has created problems--I can't use my older laptop anymore.

NOTE: I posted this reply on another thread, but just to make sure it is seen by anyone having this problem, I am re-posting it here as well.

I just purchased a new 24" iMac with Snow Leopard and a 1 TB Time Capsule last week. I have a G5 iMac and a G4 Mac Mini on the same network, which was running with a Motorola router supplied by Verizon with their FIOS installation. Everything worked fine when I put the new iMac on the network, UNTIL I substituted the Time Capsule for the Motorola Router. When I did that, I immediately began having kernel panics on the G5 iMac and screen freezes and kernel panics on the Mac Mini.

I called Apple today, and the networking tech told me it was a known problem with 10.4.11 running in the new network environment. He assigned me a case number, asked me to send him a "panic.log" file that my iMac system had created, and said that he expected they would develop a software fix for it. He didn't say whether the fix would be to 10.4.11 or the Airport Extreme software in the Time Machine. He also said that installing Leopard on the older systems should fix the problem, but I don't have a copy of Leopard to install. I told him I would be happy if Apple would supply me 10.5 at no cost to install, but he didn't take the bait and said again they should have a software fix at some point.

Meanwhile, my G5 iMac and Mac Mini are almost unusable. Bummer!

Oh good, it's not just me (sorry all). My G4 mini started doing the black screen thing right after I put in a 2tb TC 3 weeks ago. The family macbooks and powerbooks all play nicely with it, though. The mini is still on 10.4, everything else is 10.5 or 10.6. I'm a bit relieved to think it's a Tiger issue and not a hardware problem. I hope we can all get a fix for this soon!

I have the same problem. I cannot installed leopard on my computer (IMac g5): it says the media is damaged and I can not connect to the internet through my time capsule just recently installed. No problems with my macbook pro lntel dual core. What did you do? did you find a way to work it out or did you through your machine to the trash? ...
