Internet connection lost after sleep - Ethernet

I have just started using a new router (a Linksys). My problem is that after the iMac comes out of sleep I cannot get an internet connection using ethernet. It is not the router, a PC connected at the same time does not lose its connection and the internet light on the router stays lit.

When I lose the connection I cannot access the router's web page @ 192.168.1.1. The admin login box appears but with a name that relates to a previous router I used. I assume that this is part of the problem.

Any ideas?

Couchcowboy -

Good to hear the location switch + sleep is working for you, even though I know this is all ridiculous 😉

I tried setting up a new ethernet location to see if it was something in my current location settings/preference file but no such luck. Same issue with a brand new location. I did notice while traveling last week that I had no sleep/disconnect issues while using AirPort so I think my issue may be related to an ethernet connection only.

I'm about to purchase a new MBP in the next week or so and swap the hard drives, curious if I'll see this issue migrate to the new Mac. I suspect it will.

Having same problem of network connectivity dropping off w/ a brand new iMac 27" i3 (10.6.60) on a Belkin wireless router (FSD8235-4 v2) in a LAN. Other windows and android devices using this same router, both wired and wireless, not losing connectivity but the iMac drops it regularly. Once connectivity drops off all the iMac sees is the router but all other devices in the LAN and the internet connection are dropped. Any change in network preferences or running network diagnosis immediately returns the connection. Have tried different network settings using DHCP and DHCP with manual address and manually setting the ip address and updated the firmware on the router but all methods end with the same results. Will try the suggestion to turn off the "wake for network access" option but this is all very frustrating for a PC guy trying out his first Mac!

I may have a possible solution for those having problems with their iMac dropping network after sleep. I have been following this topic for a while any noticed this issue around the release of 10.6.5.

I have tried using DHCP, DHCP with Manual address and even Manual settings but each time when my iMac woke from sleep overnight it had lost connection. One impractical fix was to go into network settings and change the IP and apply the settings which reset the connection and allowed for network access. This was a bit of a pain so looking into it further it seems the issue relates to renewing the DHCP between the iMac and Router. The solution I found was to change the Renewal Date dictated by the Router. In my case it was set to renew once a day. I have since changed the renewal time to once a year and since then my iMac wakes perfectly every day with full network access.

I hope this of help to others as I know it been causing me a lot of hassle.

Aaahhh...

Glad to discover I'm not the only one to be having this issue - I've been getting round it by unplugging/ plugging the Ethernet cable for a couple of seconds and the allows me to get my Web access back.

For me this started happening about a month or so ago, but I have been running 10.6.5 without this issue.

However.....

This is my scenario and it only happens approx 50% of the time - the other 50% of the time everything is A-OK.

I wake from sleep, but when I try and access a web page I get the "you are not connected to the internet" message BUT I can still download from the Internet/Newsgroups with an NZB in SabNZB+ - so this leads me to believe I still have a connection of some sort.

This started happening to me too just a couple of weeks ago. I have a wired connection to an ASUS router on an early 2009 Mac Pro desktop running 10.6.6. Other devices on the network are not affected (Windows machines, PS3, Mac mini - some wired and some wireless), so it is not my router or cable modem. The router log shows that the ethernet cable was unplugged, but I have not touched it. I have been fixing this by rebooting (the standard annoying Windows solution), but I will try some of the patches mentioned in this forum. I did replace the NVidia video card with a Radeon 5870 a few weeks ago - that's the only change I can think of in this time frame. So far this problem is intermittent but if it becomes more frequent I'll try putting the old video card back in to see if that fixes it.

I have the Belkin too! Had problems since october and called apple. They just told me to keep changing channels until I found one that worked. So I did, and it's been working well. I had to go through half the channel until one did work. But I have tried alot of the same things other people on this forum have too. So it's a combination of both that makes it work I'm sure. Been working for about a month now. It still has to look for the wireless but it normally (95%) of the time finds it. So better than it was.

I am having the same trouble with my aluminum 24" running version 10.5.8. I am directly connected to a modem via ethernet. This problem would only occur once every 5 or 6 times after waking from sleep mode. Since the last time it dropped the connection I cannot get a connection at all. Previously I had resolved it by shutting down and disconnecting my Mac from the modem. This song and dance worked the first few times, but now I cannot resolve it by doing this.

I also have had trouble connecting to the wireless in my building via my Airport. The signal strenth is strong but no internet. =(

Newbie here. Count me in, having the same problem as anyone else here. I bought it 2 months ago, first I thought I was having problems with my wireless network (Sitecom router) but then I noticed other computers didn't have the problem.

It's sad Apple doesn't solve this widely spread problem. I'll try the suggested solutions on this forum.

My 2010 iMac 21" WiFi worked fine until last week. Now I cannot even complete a Google search. If I go through the diagnostics it all says "green" but then immediately times out when I do a web search. I can connect to my neighbors unprotected WiFi and get internet, but not on my router. And my router settigns have NOT changed in years. Oh yeah, and I have to write this support email from my 10 year old PC in the garage! C'mon Apple!

All my other devices work just fine: Android Phone, iPhone, iPad, Windowds PC, and last but not least my son's NINTENDO DSI!!!! User uploaded file

I'm having trouble with my wi-fi. After putting my iMac to Sleep and waking it up, my Airport tries to connect to a neighbor's encrypted network rather than connecting with my own. I've checked System Preferences, Airport is first choice and my own network is the preferred network and it's on Automatic. This is more of an irritant than a real issue but I'd rather it connects to my own network immediately upon waking from Sleep mode.

Still same old c---. I'm now not sure if switching user locations makes a difference or not. It seems to be purely random on when my iMac will connect and when it won't. I also leave Time Machine off and still have this constant problem. I tried increasing my DHCP lease to 365 days and it didn't make any difference; iMac connects upon awakening occasionally, most times it does not. Interestingly, switching users sometimes gives me a "yellow" light (after re-sleeping and re-waking) and states, "No IP Address", "Unknown State, The status of your network connection cannot be determined", yet connects to the internet just fine.
I've had Macs for 20 years and all the problems I've had with this iMac (see my other posts elsewhere) have created the worse experience I've ever had. I've always had Mac Pros in the past, but since Apple seems determined to never make a mid range mac without monitor, and since I can no longer afford the Pro, guess I'm stuck having to use this All-N-One.
