Safari and Adium will freeze Mac

I don't know what started this, but Safari and Adium won't be able to be run together. This started a few days ago.
If I have Adium (my version is 1.4b17) already running, and then open Safari, within minutes it will freeze the entire system, and give me the spinning ball. The same happens if I try it in the opposite order (Safari then Adium).
Interestingly enough it freezes application by application, starting with Safari or Adium, until the whole system is inoperable. It remains like that for a certain amount of time and then goes back to normal for a few seconds, right away it freezes again. This keeps happening till I close either Adium or Safari (which is done using one of those short intervals of normality.)
This is REALLY annoying... I've tried removing both Safari and Adium, then installing them again, nothing changed.
Google Chrome (which I'm using right now) and Firefox are operating perfectly well.

Does anyone have an idea how to fix that? Is it a corrupted file that can be removed or what?

But I really don't think it's an Adium issue...

Adium is not an Apple product. Personally I would put my money on
it being a problem with Adium and not Safari. If it runs fine with
Safari being used and Adium not being used then that further points
to the source of the problem as Adium. There would seem to be some
interaction between Adium and Safari at some point when they are both
running - or possibly a Safari plugin that is causing the conflict.
Do you have any Safari plugins loaded? If so, which ones?
(I don't use Adium.)
