Can i use my iphone 3g as ipod touch without activation?

With christmas Closeby i have a question on Iphone 3g---

Can i purchase a iphone and Not activate it for phone use but use it as a ipodtouch and for wifi access where available without activating it as a phone thru at&t until a later time because i dont want to get a ipod touch and then 3 months down the road buy a iphone...

None of the features of the phone will work until it is activated.

let me rephrase that
wheni say activated i mean having the phone enabled / turning it on with at&t so as to activate it and use it as a ipod touch and wifi internet access without making any calls or getting any or even using a sim card until a much later time

Regardless of whether you make any calls or not, you are still going to have to pay ATT $70/month for an activated phone.

You would be better off buying the Touch if you don't plan on using the iPhone as a phone.

To use an iPhone as a iPod Touch, it has to have a the deactivated SIM card in it that was most recently used in the phone when it was last used on the cell network. If the SIM was never activated for that iPhone, and the phone never activated, iTunes will just try to activate the phone with a carrier.
