Data Migration

Hello,

I know there are thousands of posts on the subject; but, being that I'm getting my i7 on Monday, I thought I'd get the low-down on how to migrate over from my 24" white iMac (intel). I currently have a TM backup of the iMac and a Carbon Copy Clone backup. This is a bootable 250GB LaCie drive. My question is should I use the TM or the CCC backup to load up the new machine. I guess alternative 3 is to ethernet the two machines together and do it that way. Seems the same as hooking up the FW LaCie backup drive.

I don't want all my programs, but do want iLife data (photos, music, etc) and Home folder files.

Any thoughts are appreciated...Nano

I would first go through Setup Assistant and decline doing a migration right away. Use the iMac +as is+ for a while. You should run Software Update to apply Apple's recent updates. Once you are 100% satisfied that everything is running perfectly, you can run Migration Assistant from Applications/Utilities/. Then, if you have a problem with something, it will be easier to troubleshoot.

If you decide to use Migration Assistant, there is a screen where you select the source of your data. You can select any of your three options on that screen. One will be +Time Machine backup or other disk+ so if you select that option, you can select either your Time Machine backup or the clone. It should not matter which source you use, if the data is the same in all of them.

After selecting the data source, there is a screen for selecting what to migrate. On that screen, you may want to only select to migrate Users, and not +Applications, Settings, and Other...+ This will migrate your user data but leave other data alone. It is best to install application from their original source, if possible, making sure you have the latest versions and weeding out (not installing) applications you no longer use.

Instead of using Migration Assistant, you can also move the data manually by connect the data source and using a Finder window.

Well the i7 came early today. What a nice surprise that was. 6 days early. So far I'm extremely happy with it. I will say that I did have the user name problem when migrating from my TM backup. I wanted to name the Home Folder the same and it wouldn't let me. After a search of the board I found that I could log in as root and change the name. All worked out except I did have to reset permissions on one application. No big deal.

Thanks
