Command Delete makes me want to kill myself

Command-delete must be the most frustrating keyboard shortcut on the mac, particularly as it's system wide, and not always undoable. Deletes the current line you're working on, and many times a whole paragraph. As far as I can see, in Mail, you can't get back what you deleted. Particularly frustrating as I have a piece of screenwriting software (final draft) where command delete is the previous word delete. Ahhh!

How can I sync these up so that either Final Cut uses Option-delete for previous word deletes, or mail and the rest of the system uses the final draft method. And even if I can't sync, can I at least turn off the command-delete function of deleting lines and paragraphs with no undo?

If you're using Leopard, why have you posted in the Snow Leopard forum?

Command-Delete is not a systemwide command, and it is undoable, as long as you don't do anything else after that to make it something other than the last action you performed.

It should have no effect in Final Draft, since it's not part of the Finder, or a system application. I use all sorts of other Apple and non-Apple programs and Command-Delete has no effect on any of them. It certainly does not delete words, lines, or paragraphs in Mail. You cannot turn this off.

At best, you could setup your own keyboard shortcut(s) for Final Draft, as long as you don't try to override one that is already taken by the program or the System.

I'm using snow leopard.

In mail, command-delete deletes the whole line, option-delete deletes a word. As far as I can see, command-delete is not undoable - once the line is gone, it's gone. At least this is the case in Mail and Safari. Just tried it now - deleted the line then when I hit command-z to undo, all the text in the box was deleted. Had to choose redo typing from edit to save everything after the line delete. So there's definitely something funky here.

Final Draft can't be customized -- already talked with their system support.

Seems to me that if command-delete is consistent through mail, safari, ichat, etc, then it should be considered system wide. Any time one enters text, and one hits command-delete, there's a consistent effect of deleting the current line.

In the end, it's Final Draft's inconsistent use of shortcut keys that's the problem. These are the sorts of things you want to be consistent across apps and it's frustrating when vendors decide to go their own way, and not allow users the choice of being able to stick with what they know from other apps.

I have not experienced or observed this behavior in Leopard or Snow Leopard, though I admittedly don't use either system much, as I find them inferior to Tiger.

Command -Delete isn't systemwide in Tiger, and it isn't for me in Leopard or Snow Leopard. I've used applications that include the purely evil Adobe CS Suite with those horrible installers and ever-more-complicated feature bloat, as well as Celtx, and Command-Delete does nothing in any of them.

You should be able to create a keyboard shortcut for virtually any well-behaving application, even Final Draft, using the Keyboard & Mouse panel in System Preferences. Click on the question mark to open the Help window for that feature.

I don't think I can do it as it would mean remapping option-delete from what it does currently -- I think deleting the line in final draft -- to just the word. This is the issue -- no customizability - might have to look into running a third party app.

Are you saying when you hit command-delete here in safari while you're typing in this text box, the line doesn't delete? What happens for you? This can't be new to leopard -- i've been option-deleting for years. It's what is normal for deleting words.

I encountered this problem as well in Mail, which was incredibly frustrating to me as well.

My eventual solution was to rebind the global Command+Delete sequence to go to the beginning of the line and select it, which is very close to the original functionality, but prevents me from deleting the line with no undo.

The downside of this is that it is global, and not just confined to mail.

If you're interested in doing something similar, you can go here: http://blog.macromates.com/2005/key-bindings-for-switchers/ which has instructions for rebinding keys and key combinations.
