Strange Finder issue

I have been using Macs at Home and work since OS 7. I have 3 machines at home, the oldest of which (PowerMac G5 1.6ghz) is running 10.4.1

Recently, I connected a USB disk to my new Airport Extreme router, and shared out the AirDisk. I have some unrelated issues which can be seen here;

Anyway... The strangest thing is happening on this box. When I copy from that machine to the AirDisk, usually the Finder becomes unstable. If I close a finder window, it usually locks up during the copy process! Or does it? It certainly looks as though the Finder's locked up, but when I look at the AirDisk from another machine, it's quite clear the file-transfer is still in progress! The Finder is completely unresponsive, along with the copy progress-bar, but sure enough the background process is still going.

I know my way around Macs, but since OS X, I've not spent much time learning about the OS technologies... It certainly seems more like a GUI error, as the UI is the only affected component. I suppose the Finder is a GUI app in the end anyway...

I wonder if anyone has seen this before, and might suggest a trouble-shooting path before I decide to tear that old box down and build it up again. (I should probably do that over Christmas anyway)

Thanks, and Happy Holidays to all!

Thanks for your reply!

Like I said, the machine in question is running 10.4.1. I have 10.4 on both G5's and 10.6.2 on my MacBook.

The SMB share is for XBMC on an old Xbox, but that issue is only related to the post I linked in this question. XBMC has a few sharing options, SMB being (apparently) the easiest.

The drive is a Maxtor 750gb one-touch 4, but I formatted it and got rid of all the Maxtor backup stuff. It's really just a 7200 RPM USB drive now, formatted with HFS+.

I do recall the 4GB limit with regards to SMB, but the transfers are limited to smaller file sizes. Mostly movies and such, as this AirDisk I set up is primarily for the XMBC (media center) hooked up to the TV.

I really don't think the issues are related to the drive model, nor the SMB share, as we're really just talking about a Mac running 10.4.1 pushing files to an AirDisk formatted as HFS+. My guess is the issue is possibly that it's an AirDisk; I've read many reports of various issues.

Maybe, but in the middle of this we're converting HFS+ to SMB, then converting SMB back to HFS+.

I read that too, but I don't have one.
