Apple TV taking a long time to download an iTunes Store movie rental
Normally when we rent a movie from the iTunes Store via Apple TV we're able to start watching it within a few minutes. We just rented one, however, and the downloading process is going super slow. It's been downloading for at least 10 minutes, it's just 22 percent done, and AppleTV is saying that we won't be able to start watching it for another 35 minutes.
Our Internet seems to be working fine and at normal speeds otherwise though.
Any idea why the Apple TV is taking so long to download this movie rental?
MacBook Pro, 2.56 GHz, 4 GB RAM. 250 GB HD; iMac, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB HD,
Mac OS X (10.6.2),
iPhone 3Gs, AppleTV, PowerBook G4
So I plugged my Apple TV directly into the modem using an Ethernet cable and it worked like a charm. You tube videos loaded immediately. Apparently my old Apple Airport is the issue. Try this yourself to see if this is your problem too. Unfortunately we can't do this with our IPAD which also has a terrible time uploading You tube videos. Must be time to upgrade our flying saucer shaped airport.
Reboot of the apple tv (power cable out for 10seconds) fixed it this time.
Was taking forever to "load" and after 10 minutes the screen showed the play bar at the bottom at about 20%.
Took the power of, the waited for 10seconds, plugged power back in, apple tv started up.
Move showed as "rented and 29days left" and when I pressed play it almost immediately came up. After pressing play a short message was shown "authorising" and then it started, altogether a few seconds only.
Have you recently update to softawre 3.0+
I've seen a few comments along these lines.
It's all relative, but I'd love to be able to download a movie within an hour - takes about 12 hours for me on my poor UK (BT line) internet connection.
im having same trouble tonight. hd rentals are usually ready to watch within a few minutes. its taken over 3 hours to download 26% of the movie tonight. my connection is running fine, so the problem is not there.
will be wanting a refund because its too late to watch the movie now.
I am getting the same too, i have "speedtested" my connection and it is blazing fast - must be the apple side of the equation. This has happened before, I am getting tired of renting a movie and then not being able to watch it that night.
Is it Hi-def or SD? SD movies are normally ready to watch in a few minutes. HD movies take longer (I think it says something to this affect on the Apple website).

you have 30 days to start watching it.
He probably means that it's too late in the evening to start the video, at least that was our problem.
The movie was Hi-def, lineout, but they almost always are and we've never had it take so long--it would have been faster for me to drive out to the local video store and pick up a DVD.

I have never waited this long to download a movie rental, HD or otherwise. Just 14% in an hour and a half! I ordered the rental directly from apple tv, not itunes on my imac. This is ridiculous. My family wanted to watch the movie tonight, not sometime in the next 30 days. What's the problem?
I was wondering how you got refunded from Itunes. I too tried to download a rental last nite and began watching it, then 35 minutes in it froze and said it needed to keep downloading. Waited 15 more minutes and it wouldnt let us go any further so we went to bed... frustrating. thanks
You guys aren't alone. I have notice slow downloads increasing in frequency. As of today, I don't get past the 0% download mark. AppleTV is really becoming unusable as a way to watch movies, which is why I bought it in the first place.
