change apple remote ID

I am running boxee on my mac mini and would like to operate it using my harmony 1100 remote control. I found a really great guide on setting this up here:

http://funwithcomputers.wordpress.com/2008/03/01/using-the-harmony-880-remote-wi th-your-macs-built-in-ir-port/

I for some reason cannot change the Apple Remote's ID. I have tried doing what the guide says under 'Step 2' and pushing 'Menu & Play/Pause' for 5 seconds to change the ID but it isn't changing. At least the app "Remote Buddy" isn't recognizing the change if it is.

I don't know what is causing the problem. It could be the Apple Remote, it could be the software, or it could be me doing something wrong. I have no idea but any suggestions are appreciated.

mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.2), mini as HTPC

you could try installing the alternative driver from http://www.iospirit.com/labs/candelair/
After installing the user interface and then the actual driver you're asked to restart the computer.
After restarting select the candelair preference pane in the systemspreferences panel (bottom row). Here you'll find the option to change the Apple Remote's ID.

I installed the candelair driver because of a problem that my computer wouldn't recognize the IR remote. Since installing Snow Leopard. Everything works again now.
