Nikon Coolscan 5000 slide scanner - not supported since 10.5.5

Shortly after buying my Mac Pro and installing 10.5.5 my Nikon Coolscan 5000 slide and film scanner won't scan and save files. Apple have said it's a Nikon problem and Nikon have no plan to produce an update. I was just told to buy SilverFast instead which may work, but will cost £400 first to buy.

Any other work arounds with Photoshop Elements or another program? I have a slide feeder which will take up to 50 slides at a time. Any software suggestions which will allow this. My PC is much slower than my Mac, so would save me hours of time doing it on my Mac

Many thanks

Mac Pro (2008 model), Mac OS X (10.6.2)

HI,

You posted in the Leopard forum but you installed 10.5.5 and your profile indicates you are running 10.6.2 That's a might confusing....

In any case, try reinstalling the drivers (sofware) that came with your scanner then repair disk permissions.

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Scanner manufacturers not updating their drivers is a common problem, and an irritating one. They bring out new scanners every 12 minutes instead. 😉

The solution I found is not to use their software at all, but instead use the far superior software VueScan:

http://www.hamrick.com/

which IMO is about the best scanner software around. Most scanners are supported, but you can check before buying.

NO, I have no association with them, just a satisfied user who has managed to keep his oldish Epson scanner useable since Tiger 10.4.4!

Thanks Carolyn

I am using Snow Leopard as my profile indicates but was advised in the Snow Leopard forum to repost in the Leopard forum too. The concenus in SL forum was to use VueScan, but by not using Nikon software, I will have to scan slides individually rather than use my slide feeder.

I will let you know how I get on repairing Disk Permissions.

Many thanks
Matt
