reset pass code

Can anyone tell me. If I have forgotten pass code on the ipod touch 2nd gen, do I have to restore it, or is there a way to reset the pass code through iTunes? Can not understand why it is doing this, because I reset the pass code and had to put it in twice and now it seems that it does not recognize it.
