Paste A Photo Inside A Heart Shape?

Here's a Pages '09 challenge...

What's the simplest way to paste a photo inside a heart shape? I can't work out how to do it.

You can insert the Black Heart Suit special character, from the Edit menu. But how do you do an Image Fill on a typed character?

Hi Reuben

You can not fill type directly in Pages.

You can strip them off their outlines in 3rd party applications:

…and brink them back in as .pdfs or via circuitious route, eventually as Shapes.

You can draw your own shape, the pen tool is at the bottom of the Toolbar's Shapes menu. The shapes can be colored, stroked, filled and have text in them.

Probably the simplest method is to create a .pdf of the graphic in another appliactiona nd drag it into Pages.

Excellent answer Jerrold. Thanks a lot for taking the time to do that.

A few questions:

• Did you start off with a white heart on a black background?
• Was Instant Alpha used to make the white/heart shape transparent?
• How was the graphic from iPhoto overlaid? As an element BEHIND the black heart cut out?

If Pages '09 simply let you do things like Image Fills on text, then this kind of problem could be solved much quicker.

Ruben,

Pages is pretty versatile, but requires some ingenuity at times. Once you become familiar with a few basics the paths to other more complex operations will be more evident.

It doesn't matter what color the text is, as long as it has contrast from the background. The background color can be set in several ways. I don't remember exactly what I did, but you could just set a colored rectangle Shape behind the text before Printing to PDF. When you Select an area to Copy in Preview you are in effect Cropping the background. Then when you use instant Alpha in Pages you will cut a hole in your graphic that includes all the area of the selected color of the text.

Regards,

Jerry
