How to wear a watch w/o scratching PB?!

I haven't worn a watch for at least ten years...until today. Of course the first thing I noticed when I started to type was the "skreech skreech" of my new watch band scraping against the PB.

I know 99.9% of y'all are watch wearers, so I'm hoping there is a solution out there. (Taking the watch on and off all day is not an option!) Right now I have a piece of fabric folded up covering the left side next to the trackpad, but I look like a kook 🙂

Thanks!

Hi Vaguely

funny thread - one of those small but real (and real annoying) problems 🙂

I wear a Casio G-Shock that's rubber encased - and the band is made entirely of rubber and hard plastic. I guess that's why I've never noticed this, because i WOULD notice if something scratched on my PB all day.

It suggests a solution: can you get a new watch band?

Peace

Simple 🙂

Specially that now the weather is starting to cool a bit, we'll suppose you wear shirts or long sleeves i.e. sweater etc.

What you do is push the watch under your clothes (move it up your arm as far it would go) and this way it'll be covered so when you put your hands on your machine your clothes will be touching the surface and not the metal. Thats what i do. In the summer, if you are not wearing dress shirts etc then just make the sacrifice and take your watch off.

Thanks, everyone, for all the input. I guess there is no other option but to work around the problem.

Ian -- I tried switching wrists but unfortunately this just make the problem appear on the right side of the PB.

tekmoe -- It's ironic that you, a Texan, stopped wearing a watch after getting the PB. Like you, I never used to take my watch off, either. That is, until I moved to Houston ten years ago. The pace was so much slower than L.A., it felt liberating. And even though I only lived there a year, I never put the watch back on. I will consider your advice, and put the watch on when I'm away from home. (Who am I kidding? I'll never remember to put it on if I take it off!)

Greg -- Unfortunately, my watch style is a link style, so there is no switching the band. However, a rubber and plastic watch is a great option. I will see if I can find a women's style....

PRAVDA -- In SoCal the weather is not so much a factor. The funny thing is that as I was reading your post I was breaking in a new sweatshirt and immediately noticed the problem went away. Oh, and since I'm a girl, I wear very few dress shirts 🙂

Let's just hope this is the biggest dilemma I face for the rest of the year 😉

Thanks -- Joyce

Another solution is the Road Tools Podium Cool Pad.

http://www.roadtools.com/

It tilts your laptop at an angle so you have to bend your wrists slightly to type. This get's your wrists up off the surface of the laptop so you shouldn't have a problem scratching it. An added bonus is that it lets air circulate under the laptop and it runs cooler (fan comes on less).

Clear contact paper is also a good idea. I used clear packaging tape to protect the paint on my TiBook and it worked great! You can barely tell there's even tape on it.

I also just take my watch off. I don't really care about little scratches from my watch on the computer, but I do worry much about my watch getting scratched from the computer as the watch is worth more then my powerbook. (Not in dollar amount, but sentimental value)

Just take it off when you work on the computer. I set my watch on my rubber keyboard/screen protector.

Vaguely, are you typing on the PB at home in a home office setting? Just curious, as if you are, why not just buy an external keyboard, and type on that. That way, you dont have to worry about typing on the small keypad on the PB, and you get to wear the watch without having to worry about scratches or how to protect the PB. Even so, I do like the idea of some protection while away from the office and you dont have that external keyboard to plug in.
