I have an Mac Pro 8 core in my music studio. It is having a problem these days: suddenly it turns off.
When I try to restart , it can't restart. I have to wait about five or more minutes to it be able to turns on again.
Would you have any idea what this problem should be?
Is it in a well ventilated area? If not it could be overheating and shutting down because it's getting too hot. You might check the Console messages (located in the Utilities folder) to see if it provides any clues.
Yes it is. And sometimes it shuts off in the morning, just a few minutes after starting up, when it is still cold.

I've tried the SMC reset. I think it didn't works because after the test, when I start the Mac, it turns off for three times. After that it starts normally. I'm writing on it now...
But I don't know for how long it will work untill the next surprise.
Try using Disk Utility to do a
Disk Repair, as shown
in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.

I think this is not the problem, because my computer sometimes starts normally and everything works well. Suddenly, it turns off.
Today the thing becames worst, because it is not even starting. When I turn it on, it begins the starting, and before the sistem load it turns off. I'm writing from another machine.
I've runned this test too.
And I've contacted Apple too, but they need to keep the computer there for 15 days to test if the problem is in the power font, in the mother board or in the processor...
And I need to work today.
Do you know if the Mac Pro Quad Core (not the dual) is enough to handle professional audio with Logic Pro? Is ther much difference betwenn the Quad core and the Dual concerning to audio?
Because I'm thinking in buy another Mac today ( a simple quad ) to be able to work!
I don't use Logic Pro so I couldn't say if a quad-core would be adequate. It probably depends on how many tracks and filters/effects you're using on whether a quad-core mac would be adequate.
Didn't you have a 600VA UPS? That's too small. Try running without the UPS for a while and see if the problem corrects itself.
Also when is the last time you have cleaned out the guts of your machine? Dust can accumulate quickly (esp. if you keep your computer on the floor - bad!). Dust is a great insulator, which is not good for computers. Be sure to check the CPU heat sinks and the memory modules and the power supply. If you use compressed air, do not hit a fan with it and let the fan spin - you will ruin the bearings in the fan.
I got the same problem here. Working on an 8-core 2.8 GHz and mostly Final Cut Pro.
Same sort of errors, turns itself off after booting and then while booting. Have to leave it off for a few minutes and then it seems to run...
I got a 10TB Drobo Storage System connected through eSATA and when i leave that off the Mac seems to run fine - but it also happenend without the RAID connected...
First off, turn the darn airport card off. It does not work and crashed my box in the studio all the time. In fact if you search the discussions group you will find that it is a major problem.
2nd you need to turn off the "Sleep" function on your mac as Apple messed that code up on the SMC firmware too, it is also in the discussions. When your mac goes to sleep, it has dirty code written so it will not wake the buss or FW drives thus giving you some of that stuff in your console.
Also you need to download a temperature monitor or smc Fan control to fix Apples mistake of not have the computer turn the fans up when the temp goes up. This will let you "MANAGE" your problem, bun not solve it. Then you need to take screen shots of your cpu temps, and ram and HD temps when you are doing audio and print and save for your trip to Apple Genious bar which will happen around a year when your computer frys from over heating, not to mention your MOTU or DigiDesign audio cards that sit next to the oven.
If it keeps hanging then take it now, and plan at least 3 trips to the genious bar as they will blame it all on you, and your software. IF persistant Apple will replace the MAc or the cpu/mem and logic board and it might fix it.
I'd wait for Intel's 6-core 32nm to be made available at this point.

And then Apple just started offering a 3.2GHz single quad $1200 extra. Thing is the next generation are faster more power at same clock.
Your still on 10.5.8 so that rules out all the 3rd party driver issues that can plague PCIe equipment. And you can't do your work in Windows while this gets sorted out...
