Mail turning messages into attachments

The problem is that the senders of these emails are using Windoze, and you use a Mac. If you look at the actual file size of those so-called "attachments", you'll probably find they are very small, and if you open it in Safari, you'll probably discover there is nothing there at all. If that's the case, you can just ignore them all the time.

Check that, then post back with results.

I just started to notice this after someone replied to a message I sent them. Look through my sent pile, I've probably been confusing a lot of people over the last few months with random attachments. After a bit of troubleshooting I've come up with a workaround.

Any message body after an attachment gets converted to the ATT0000X.htm, so the workaround is to ensure all your attachments are placed inline at the end of your message -- even after your signature lines.

If you want to test yourself, place an attachement in the middle of your signature and watch the first half of your signature show up, while the second half ends up in a "ATT0000X.htm" file.

This isn't a problem in the receiving mail reader, but a problem in the way mail is composing the message.

Are you using an Exchange Server? These ATT0000x attachments are typically the product of the SMTP used with the Exchange Server network.

I am having the same issues. It places original messages in a separate attachment (att0000X.htm) versus inline with the message when I reply and attach a file.

Not sure if there is a solution out there.

Keep in mind that is not Mail that is doing this, but the server through which you are sending -- I assume this is an Exchange Server network?

It is an exchange server. But the issue did not appear until after the recent update of 4.2.

This may be, but the change to prevent such behavior, as I understand it, must be made by the administrator of network. What version of Mail were you using immediately prior to 4.2? What version of Exchange Server is being used?

Perhaps you might want to check this. Preferences>Viewing> check the box that says Display remote HTML messages.

I too get messages which convert the html images into attachements but still they show up in the mail preview pane correctly positioned and messages are complete. I simply ignore the html attachments.

If the problem with attachments in sent mails, I would suggest check this. Go to the Menu Edit>Attachments in the sub menu select 'always send windows friendly' and 'always insert attachments at the end of messages'

I did have the "windows friendly" option checked, but the "end of messages" option looks like it will be a usable workaround that I've never noticed before.

And for those who have previously ask, I am on an exchange server.

I recently started using Mail on an exchange server (Exchange 2007). Mail works great but when I send mail with an attachment it always sends an extra ATT0000.htm attachment.
Is there any way to prevent this?

If I us my .mac address and that mac server and send to an email on exchange they still get the extra attachment. Any ideas?

Go to Mail > Preferences > composing. Does the Message formating read "Rich Text" ? try plain text and see if it helps.

Thanks yes this works. If I send attachments and use plain text I do not send the extra attachement.
