mighty mouse cable length changed?

Has anyone else come across this?

I got a new mighty mouse and the cable is *26cm shorter* than the old one. I phoned Apple to ask if they had changed the specs and they said they have two models -- a short cable and long cable mouse. The guy in the store didn't mention this and I can't find anything about this on their website either.

I'm pretty peeved about this.

I have a mighty that came with my iMac which has a rather short cable ... ca. 45cm total (it came together with a wire keyboard, so I guess it's short because it's supposed to be plugged into the side of the keyboard, which is fine). That was a mid 2007 computer.

A friend of mine bought a mouse and keyboard separately this year (mid 2009), it has a longer cable than my mouse and in addition to that also had a USB extension cable in the box.

that's the length of new mouse (45cm), the old one was 73cm. As the mouse has to plug into the back of the keyboard it's totally useless for me as a graphic designer I use a lot of mouse area. I'm going to return it and find an alternative :-/

What I'm really wanting to know is, why is it not advertised that they sell two lengths of mouse?

ETA: I'm using the old mouse again after reading the tip to fix the scroll wheel -- unplug mouse, turn upside down, rub the wheel on a clean piece of paper in all directions for at least 60 seconds -- voila! working mouse wheel again 🙂

I noticed that recently also:
The cable length on the Mighty Mouse that "ships" with a Mac is shorter.
When you "Buy" a Mighty Mouse (À la carte), that cable wass definitely longer..

Did you buy the mouse À la carte, or did your new Mighty Mouse come from a new Mac?

At least that how it used to be... Maybe they have just standardized to the newest short length.

I bought both mice 'a la carte'. The call center chap said the mice are available in two different lengths, but I feel his answer was flippant and wrong.

There is no such information on Apple's website so it is my conclusion that Apple have shortened the length to save money without informing their customers.

The Mighty Mouse that came with my iMac purchased a year ago is only 45cm. So it's not a change that's happened recently. There is indeed, though, a Mighty Mouse with a longer cable; it's listed in the service parts. But I have no idea which what systems or under what circumstances that longer-tailed mouse might have been shipped with a computer.
