What iPod Touch generation do I have?

I have read a lot on here about how there is definitely a first and second gen iTouch. Is there a third? I think I saw someone say that there isn't a fourth.

I don't have any of the original packaging to find out what generation I have, but I was hoping to find out where I would have to look or what I would have to look up to find out what generation iTouch I have. Can anyone help me?

the third generation was released in september.
do you know when your ipod was originally bought?
the first and second gens are easy to tell apart, the second gens have external volume controls but the first gens don't. second and third gens are more difficult to tell apart.

Model says MB528LL... I'm not sur how that I supposed to tell me what generation it is.... But I bought it around April '08

If it does not have a volume rocker on the side then it is Gen 1.

If it does, it is gen 2.

That model number is for a 2nd generation Touch (8 GB). You must've bought it later in the year than April since the 2nd gen came out in September '08.
