Error codes -6999, -48, iphone won't sync!

Hello!
I'm new to this forum, having been an ipod owner for many years with no probs whatsoever, I've never really needed to ask any questions before (and I certainly don't know enough to answer any!)

I'm a very lucky girl and was bought an iphone 3GS for my birthday. However.... it absolutely will not sync. I have the latest itunes which will sync perfectly with my ipod original 30GB. It absolutely refuses to sync the iphone 😟

Error codes -6999 and -48 show up after the message telling me that it won't sync because the folder can't be found. Apple support has no suggestions/solutions and all itunes suggests is resetting the iphone (which I've done now, 3 times). I've been through previous discussions on here that suggest switching off firewall. Tried it, nothing. Tried reinstalling itunes, nothing. Tried checking the iphone as a disk for errors, nothing.

Anyone got any ideas? Or am I right in thinking that taking it back to the store in the morning with a sad face could be the only way forward?

Thank you all in advance!

Hi Katy I have the same problem but I get errors when I synch applications downloaded from iTunes, it seems to be an incompatibility problem between iTunes and Windows 7 (that's sure), so far there is no solution for this issue yet, but I've tried syncing my iPhone 3GS in Windows XP and works perfectly and doesn't give me any errors or problems. Try syncing your iPhone to another PC with Windows XP and the lastest iTunes installed.

Hi Tony, you're right about compatibility issues. iPhone is currently back at the store where they have been able to sync with their machines (XP). Mine isn't just the apps though; I get code -6999 for trying to sync contacts, I get a "drive cannot be found" message when I try to sync music, and error code -48 when trying to sync apps.
My ipod original 30GB still syncs perfectly every time. I know others with iphone and windows 7 who have had no trouble at at all, so I can't work out what the specific difference is. Not at all impressed.
I don't have another pc to sync from, so this will be looked at tomorrow by the store to see if a solution can be found, if so, I'll post it here. If not, I think it could be a case of leave it for now until all compatibilty issues are resoleved...

Do you have an HP?

I had exactly this problem with my iPhone. The error messages I received were -6999 and -48 and "Could not find the required folder". iTunes kept telling me that I needed to restore the iPhone.

I was using an new HP on Windows 7 64-bit. The problem was due to the Intel chip in the new HPs and a known problem.

Solution:
A Bios Update (downloaded from the Support section of the HP website) resolved the problem, and I can now sync my iPhone with iTunes successfully

This is not a P55 chipset problem only, because I have
my PC with the Intel P45 chipset and I have same problem
in Windows 7 x86/x64 also I've tried in a Lenovo R60
Notebook with the Intel 945GM chipset and Windows 7 x32
installed and I get the same errors and sync problems,
definetly this is an issue between Windows 7 and iTunes.

Please find a fix for this problem, it is DEFINITELY a windows 7 and itunes compatibility issue.

My ipod touch 2G syncs fine with my XP laptop, but every time I try to sync on my 64-bit windows 7 laptop, I get a variety of error messages such as -48, 6999, or "cannot sync, a folder was specified instead of a file".

I've reinstalled itunesmultiple times, restored my ipod, restored it in recovery mode, i've even reinstalled the ipod drivers and nothing works.

You'd think Apple would test their new firmware on all models and systems before releasing it, very annoying.

I have the same problem. I have an Intel DP55KG MB, Win7 64bit and I've been running on a new install of this since the end of October. I'm sure I installed the current version of iTunes then and had the same 3GS 32GB iPhone. Apple had me do a Restore on Thurs to fix a problem with voice command. I ran into the same problem described above, but phone support was on vacation by the time it happened. I've worked all day with phone and store support. We thought we had it pegged to simply turning off Norton Internet Security. That seemed to work fine at the store, on a secondary Win7 Installed machine that I took down. But, now the problem is back on both machines again. They swapped out my iPhone twice in the process. I'm at a loss, but will continue to keep looking. If someone gets a work around or solution, please let me know ASAP. I need this working by Monday.

Hi, I'm having e-x-a-c-t-l-y the same various issues as described by shane86 with my iPod Touch 2G 16GB on my Dell Studio 1747 (Core i7, PM55 board, 4GB, Win7 64 Pro).

Only one strange thing is that after setting up this laptop during migration from my older (Vista 32) laptop everything was running well for about 5 days in a row. Since then, everything is going down the ... as soon as I try syncing photos(!).

I'm skipping Photo-Sync temporarily now and each sync (even backup and restoring) works fine - so far.
In order to get my iPod Touch back to work I copied the whole iTunes database from my new laptop to my old one again, and kept restoring and did initial syncing until finding the issues with the photos... (I took in music, films, programs etc. step by step to sort it out)

By the way: The copying method should also work with your Outlook .pst file - just in case...

Good luck & let's hope for a quick fix =)

Well this is what I could gather about this error, in my case I can not synchronize all applications downloaded from iTunes, I have to synchronize them one by one, otherwise iTunes will give me errors in Windows 7 x32 and x64. Until now I managed to reduce the number of error messages, but still I can not remove the error messages completely, well here below is what I've done to minimize the possibility of synchronization errors:

1. Entirely Disable any antivirus resident in memory (DISABLE EVERYTHING !!!)

2. (In my case) Remove the attribute "read only" to the folder "Mobile Applications", this is where the downloaded Applications are stored in iTunes (for Windows 7 x64), this is the path :

"C:\Users\(user account)\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications"

With these simple tweaks now I can synch more than one App, but I still have error messages sometimes.

I'm not sure when it first started occuring, but I have been having the same problems for days now, with my ipod Touch 16GB, latest Firmware.

Win7(32-bit)
Intel corei7 Q720 @160Ghz
4GB
NVidia GTX260M
Laptop

Had every crash possible with regards to syncing.
But it's mainly to do with syncing music and video.
I drag one .mp3 for example from my music folder into iTunes, the file goes through, but as soon as the sync starts itunes crashes.
If I turn off the device and restart, the music is often on the ipod but it sometimes causes the apps to open then immediately close.

It crashes when I press the eject button on itunes.

It has also crashes when I restart and it asks me if i want to restore or create new ipod, as soon as i click 'continue' it crashes.

Resetting/Restarting/Restoring hasn't worked.
After a long hang it usually comes up with one of the afforementioned error messages or:

'The ipod cannot be synced. A folder was specified instead of a file'
'The ipod cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found'

This is just speculation, and possibly coincidence, but it seemed to start happening when I installed TouchDJ's 'Amidio Sync' desktop app, which allows you to transfer music to an alternate folder on the ipod... i have however removed the app and I'm still having problems.

I'm having the exact same problem and I've been fighting with it for at least 10 hours today. I've done everything including reinstalling Windows 7 on my Dell Laptop. I've reinstalled iTunes 9.0.2 at least a dozen times and have tried every kind of configuration I could think of. Bottom line is iTunes does the same thing: when I plug my iPhone in it wants to restore it. I restore it and then it always gives me Errors 6999 and 48 about attempting to copy to disk and an unknown error has occurred.

THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY! PLEASE APPLE SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS!!

You can try to disable some of these anti-virus programs all your want and they do not entirely quit.

The only way for sure to eliminate the possibility of interference is to uninstall it from your computer.

I would recommend disconnecting from internet after uninstall when performing this test.

Even if you think there is no possible way your anti-virus program could be the problem test and see.

It is a simple thing to do and if it works then you just saved yourself hours of frustration.

Error codes -6999, -48, iphone won't sync!
