Snow Leopard Graphics Corruption

Ever since I have installed (clean) Snow Leopard, there seems to be a corruption with the graphics driver that occurs periodically. Any ideas? Is it possible to go back to the Leopard drivers? It has never happened in Leopard.

Thank you.

I've been running fine for days since going to 2D dock. Then last evening I was running EyeTV (as usual) but I wanted to scroll-back some live TV to see a news article I'd missed. At that point the graphics distortions re-occurred. There's a screen dump here:

Moving any window around on the screen causes all of the screen graphics to go haywire (including the dock but it's not shown here). Restarted to get it back to normal. As per an earlier post no trouble on Tiger, just since going to Snow Leopard a couple of weeks ago.

Hm, see now I'm thinking that this issue is the result of upgrading from Tiger. I've looked back through the posts & everyone with seems to have a MacBook that was upgraded from Tiger. I never had Tiger so it was a Leopard->Snow Leopard upgrade for me. Also people I know, coworkers & friends, who had Leopard & upgraded don't seem to have this issue (or those who have a full retail copy of 10.6).

Interesting...

That can't be it, my MacBook has never had Tiger on it. When I bought it is came with Leopard and than I upgraded to Snow Leopard when it was released. I'm only staring to get the problems now, so it must be 10.6.2 or 10.6.3 that has caused it.....maybe?

Ok scratch my Tiger theory.
I don't think it's 10.6.2 or 10.6.3; someone earlier posted having the problem as early as 10.6.1 when attempting a reinstall.

I think this problem is not really related to
• Using the 2D dock instead of the 3D dock
• Using an older version of Adobe Flash
• Some other voodoo that might appear to work
as I've tried various combinations, and none of them really helped in the long run.

These are all just measures to decrease the load of the X3100 graphics chip. They might work temporarily, but when you try out a graphics intensive application (I don't know what kind of intensive, using a lot of memory or GPU instructions), or work with your MacBook for a long time without sending it to sleep, the problems reoccur.

There are two realistic scenarios, in my opinion:
1. Apple somehow managed to kill the X3100 drivers in Snow Leopard.
2. Our GPUs are all turning into toast over time, and it's just a coincidence we're all witnessing this problem right now. It might be some issue of flexing or overheating. When I push my CPU to 100% load, the CPU temperature sensor displays 99°C, probably the X3100 doesn't feel any better.

An observation supporting number 2 is that the problems actually get worse over time, at least that's what I perceive.

So, by now, I think that it is indeed a hardware issue and we all have to throw away our MacBooks sooner or later, but I'd be pleased to see everything fixed by a simple graphics driver update.
