Q: Paper won't feed from multipurpose tray on 12/640 PS

Hi there: If I try to print anything--paper, labels, whatever--from the multipurpose tray the paper jam light comes on instantly, even though the paper never budges a millimeter from the tray...it doesn't seem to get touched by any mechanism at all. Plus there's a brief (no more than a second) but quite noticeable sort of groaning sound that emerges. Apparently I need to do something to a roller, from what I'm finding out, but I don't see any details on how to disassemble anything to get at whatever roller might be the issue. Is this something that the $30 kit from the fix your own printer folks would address, even though they say there's no kit for this printer (+It appears there are no printer repair kits available for your printer (apple 12/640).+)? If someone could please point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful. Thanks in advance! Bill

    Hi, sorry that I don`t have answers to your questions, but I might give you some hints that may get you one step further.
    I own a 12/640 with a multipurpose tray an a duplex unit and I know that I had to
    "tell" in the printer description in system preferenses which options this printer is able to use. The amount of RAM, optional trays and things like that.
    The repair kits they sell at "fix your..." do work well. I bought one to repair my 630pro, but I think these kits are to avoid that so called "akkordeon" malfunction (when the paper comes out folded several times.
    Telling the printer to print or not to print a startup page every time, works best with that old Apple Printer Utility (needs of course OS 9.x)
    The only "help" I can offer you is the original Printer-Manual as a PDF.
    But you may have that already.

    It needs the repair, but I just don't use the manual feed since I don't have the money to have it done or the expertise to do it myself.
