Q: new hard drive

Does anyone know a good place to get a 100gb hard drive for my powerbook? I originally ordered it with a 100gb but apple messed up the order. I did not worry to fix it because i did not think i would need all that room. But it turns out I DO!!!

    Paul,

You may want to consider an external drive. The money you'll put into a new drive for 20gb could be put into an external drive with more capacity. A 100GB internal drive will be around $170 - $300, and for around the same price you can get an external drive with 250GB-350GB.

If you go external, a firewire connection is best, as you can boot from it if needed. A USB connection will also work, however, you can't boot from it. Also, if USB, ensure there is a power supply in the drive itself, as the USB bus power doesn't work so well in our PB's. There was a recent article on Macworld that may be of interest at http://www.macworld.com/2005/10/reviews/firewiremain/index.php . You have options of buying the external drive complete or assembling your own, which entails installing the hard drive into an enclosure. Rosewill makes a very nice enclosure, model RX30, which complements our PB's looks, and can be found at Newegg.

If you want/need the storage to be all in your PB, two considerations: 120GB drives are now becoming available (Seagate has one out now), which would maximize your onboard storage. However, if you'll stay with 100GB, and want a performance boost, consider a 7200 RPM drive versus the standard 5400 RPM drive. Hitachi is one manufacturer that offers a 100GB 7200 RPM drive. Faster spinning drive means quicker access
