anti-virus software

recently whilst browsing on safari i encountered a website that safari thought was dangerous, and possibly had a virus or malware in it. i know that macs are better than pcs when it comes to viruses and things like that, but is it bad if i want anti-virus software? and does anyone know of reputable, good, FREE software that i can install, just for basic security. like i said, i know macs are safe, but i still want to be on the safe side. thanks.

There are no viruses for Macs out there. There is malware, but for it to infect your computer, you would have to approve its download and authorize its installation.

Now there is a danger that if you share files and such with a lot of Windows users, it's possible that your Mac could serve as a vector for Windows viruses. If you want something, try ClamXAV; it is spoken of highly here, though I have no personal experience with it.

I wouldn't dream of owning a Windows box without anti-virus...I've had 4 laptops, five PC's...and I had issues all the time. Update this, secure that.

I haven't had 1/100th the issues since I got my MacBook. In fact, since I cut Windows altogether last month, my computer worries are nil.

A sign I saw at The Mac Store sums it up: "We miss our PC's... +but our aim is getting better!+
