How can create a .TXT file?

Question

How can create a .TXT file?

An existing .TXT file can be opened with TextEdit.

However, when I tried to create a TXT file, the SAVE option says I can only save as RTF and some other formats but not TXT.

So anyone know how can I create a TXT file in Snow Leopard? Thanks a lot!

What happens when you select "Make Plain Text" from the TextEdit Format menu?

Go to TextEdit preferences and set the Format to Plain Text instead of Rich Text. Also check the boxes for "Ignore Rich Text Commands...."

By default, textedit saves files as rtf. You can change that in the preferences.

If you use Word, for example, then you can open a doc and save as either plain text or rich text. I imagine Open Office or iWork/(Words?) would do the same.

If you need to edit or create plain text files with any frequency, I recommend the freeware TextWrangler from BareBones. It is a much better tool for plain text than TextEdit.
