Atlona DP-200 DOES NOT WORK with 27" iMac

I recently purchased the DP-200 from Atlona http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-p-17859.html for the purpose of using my 27" iMac in target display mode with my DVI equipped Mac Mini. After correctly hooking everything up I was frustrated to see that all I could get was a black screen on the iMac with would then revert back to the normal iMac display after a few seconds.

After calling Atlona tech support this morning I've learned that in fact the AT-DP200 DOES NOT WORK with the 27" iMac. Since I purchased the device Atlona has added this note to their product page:

"Note for iMac 27" users only: Even our box is capable of passing high resolutions up to 1920x1200, users of iMac 27" will only be able to get picture with resolutions up to 1280x720 (720P). The reason for it is that iMac 27" native resolutions are: 800x600, 1280x720 or 2560x1440 (since our box is limited to single link (1920x1200), and can't work with 2560x1440 it will take the next resolution down the list which is 720p. We are working on AT-DP400 which will allow dual link resolutions (such as 2560x1440) to pass though. For PS3 or Xbox users, you can use our converter without additional devices at only 720p resolution. Make sure to set 720p prior connecting it to the DP200."

Although this suggests the device will work at a resolution of 1280x720, Atlona tech support says it will not do so without a firmware update for the DP-200 which only they can perform in-house.

I was instructed to email their RMA department which I've done and am awaiting a reply from them as to my options. I can post the results of that communication if anyone is interested.

When did you order the device? I've been considering buying the device for using my xbox on my 27" imac, however now finding out that I might have to buy it, wait on shipping, just so I can ship it back, wait for them to update the firmware, then wait for them to ship it back is a huge turn off. Do you know if they update the firmware on all the new orders?

I ordered it Nov. 29 and it shipped Dec. 3. I believe anything ordered now would have the latest firmware but I would confirm before ordering. I've been told my replacement has shipped (although I was not given a tracking number). Once I receive it and have a chance to test it out I'll post the results here and let you all know how functional it is at that low resolution on a 27" screen.

Joe, have you had a chance to test this device? I'm going through a nightmare, having ordered the similar Gefen product, only to find that it won't work at all with the new iMac 27" displays.

I see that Altona is now offering an updated product (DP-400, delivering in March) for $199 that will offer full resolution at the new iMac's native 2560x1440. My iMac is arriving in three days and I want to be able to use it as a display for the Dell Latitude D610 laptop I'm forced to use by my employer.

just an update to my experience on this. my supplier in the uk took teh dp200 back and sent me another one on the basis that it should have the firmware fix because it had only just arrived. that one also didnt work at all so i have sent a second one back, this time for a refund.

altona themselves suggested the second unit probably also had the wrong firmware, but to be honest since the DP400 was starting to be talked about i cut my losses.

I am also trying to use this to connect a Dell laptop to the iMac so i am waiting to hear from someone that this new device works and works at a decent resolution
