Movies will not open!!! Please Help!!

I received a 32GB iPod Touch yesterday as a gift. I also recently bought the movie The Hangover and downloaded the Digital Copy into iTunes. I can watch the movie in iTunes, but it will not play on my iPod Touch. It is on my iPod, but when I click on it, it says "The movie could not be played". I was wondering if anyone knew what was wrong or if you are having the same problem? Everything else on my iPod is working great! I have a 14 hour flight Thursday morning so I would really appreciate being able to watch movies and having something to do haha! Thanks for the help! 🙂

Of course a good first step to troubleshooting is almost always a reset: press and hold the power button [on the top] with the home button [at the bottom of the screen for about 6 to 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo appear. Try watching the video again.

If the reset doesn't do any thing for you, my guess is that the video is not in a format supported by the iPod. However, if this is the case, it is curious that you were able to sync the video to the iPod in the first place. At any rate, try to have iTunes convert the video: First locate and select the video in your iTunes library. Choose the Advanced menu and select Create an iPod or iPhone version. Attempt to sync this version over to your iPod and watch the video.

Good Luck

Thank you for your response!! I really appreciate it! I reset the iPod, and that didn't seem to fix the problem. When I try clicking on the Advanced button and clicking the Create iPod Version, it won't let me because it is already an iPod version. I think the problem is with the iPod for some reason. It works on my old iPod, however. It is strange how it shows up on the iPod Touch, but it just keeps saying "The movie could not be played." Stressful! Thanks again though! 🙂

I also got a new 32 GB iPod Touch. IT won't play movies or TV shows. I get the message "This movie cannot be played." I reset and restored. The odd part is that the TV shows and movies play on 1st gen touches but not on this new 3rd gen 32 GB.

The movies were purchased through iTunes and they are not HD format.

We have 4 iPhones and 5 touches in my household in addition to 8 other macs. I can usually fix things. This seems like a bug.

It also wouldn't play youtube but I did the date trick and got that to work.

Please help.

Just got off the phone with Apple Tech Support.

Here’s what worked for me. We did another Retore but first we did this:

1. Go to your hard drive

2. under Places, go to your name--the icon with the little house

3. In Library folder then go to Tunes folder then to iPod software updates folder

4. Drag to trash all of the files in the iPod software updates folder.

5. Now connect iPod and do a restore. And restore it like it’s a new iPod.

6. Then do a sync for all of the movies and apps and music etc.

That’s how we got movies to play for me.

I had the same problem and was able to fix it. Here's the deal:
Everything worked fine until the iPod Touch was registered. Then two issues happened. 1) iPod Touch will not play "Protected" movies, videos, music even though all have been downloaded as "Purchases" from iTunes. (2) All Apps downloaded from App Store do not open.

The fix needs to occur with iTunes not the iPod touch. Here's what I did:
1. Disconnect Touch from computer
2. Reboot your Computer
3. In iTunes choose "Store" then "Deauthorize Computer." Enter your password.
4. In iTunes now click on a song from your music library (any song that you downloaded from iTunes and your computer will automatically "authorize" itself.
5. Connect the Touch and Restore to the original factory settings (not from a backup).

This fixed both issues. But be careful, I had to follow these steps exactly in this order. Where in previous failed attempts at fixing the Touch I had done everything listed above but not in this order.
