driver and hookup for Canon Imagerunner 3200 ??

Does anyone have experience with Canon ImageRunner 3200 printer/copiers?? It's a giant beast that handles 2-sided/4 color printing. They rolled it into my office and it's not a plug and play situation. I don't know what driver to use to get access to all the options. There is no service contract with Canon - apparently it's been with the company but off the network for years.

What the correct driver and where can I download it??
How do I bypass the network and just plug it into my G5? (I don't see a firewire or USB port on it.) I assume I would bypass the Fiery server on the back.

I'd appreciate any experienced input.

Jay - thanks for the reply. Ive been doing exactly that all day.

I've been installing downloaded PPDs, stuff that I think are drivers,PS files, etc but nothing is getting me to the same screens/dialogs as my Windows counterpart. I was actually hoping someone in the forum was already using something that worked and could name it or send it to me. Yeah - I'm that frazzled.

Hello Josh,

We previously had the iRC3220 (a slightly later model to the iRC3200) with the imagePASS-C2 (aka Fiery) and it worked fine as a network printer from 10.4 and 10.5.

You can download the driver for the imagePASS-C1 (which I believe connects to the iRC3200) via this link. This file is compressed in zip format. Simply double-click to unpack and then run the OSX Installer located inside the Printer Driver folder. This will install the files to your Mac so that you can add the printer.

Now, to add this printer you will need to connect to it via Ethernet from the Mac. There is no way to bypass the imagePASS and there is no USB or Firewire on the imagePASS as you have seen. Assuming that the printer is already connected to your network, you should be able to add this printer using AppleTalk (if it is enabled in the imagePASS) or via IP.

To add the printer via AppleTalk, simply select to Add and then select the AppleTalk icon. If your Mac is using AppleTalk and the printer is using AppleTalk, then it should appear in this view (probably something like iRC3200-C1_print). If the imagePASS does not have AppleTalk enabled then it will work fine via IP (I would actually recommend using IP rather than AppleTalk).

To add the printer via IP, get one of the Windows users to print a test page as this will give you the IP address of the printer. Then on the Mac, select to Add and choose IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket for the protocol. Enter the IP address of the printer, change the name to something more meaningful and for the Print Using menu, select "Canon CLC-iR C3200-C1 PS Ver2.1". When you click Add you will be prompted to select which finisher and how many paper trays are installed. Select the correct options and click OK to complete the printer queue creation.

Now you are ready to test a print. While the look of the driver is not the same as your Windows colleagues, it will certainly provide you with all of the options they have.

Hope this helps. Reply if you need more assistance.

Hi Pahu - Excellent!

Now I see why I was having such problems. I had so many steps wrong. First - I would have never found that link to the au service site. I was skeptical about using an installer labeled "mactel" on my G5 but it went smoothly. I was also skeptical about using the "hp-jetdirect socket" but that worked too! I found the features I needed and I was able to get the printer to do my bidding on the very first test. Thank you.

A follow up question, if I may. When I went to select the driver (Canon CLC-iR C3200-C1 PS Ver2.1) - it was not installed anywhere - it was still on my Desktop where I had unzipped the file. I'll store it in my Documents folder unless it MUST be somewhere special. What did the installer do if not place the drivers somewhere?

Thanks for your effort in providing such detailed instructions and especially for advice that solved my problem.

Hello Josh and Merry Christmas.

Re the follow up question, when you run the installer it would have created a folder called PS3 located in HD > Library > Printers > Canon. Inside the PS3 folder will be two additional folders, Filters and PDEs. The filter folder contains the plugin 'fierycupsfilter', used during the printing process to convert data into a format suitable for the C1. The PDEs folder contains some plugins which is used to perform some of the machine specific functions, like Fiery Job Notes.

The other thing the installer does is copy the PPDs for the C1 to the folder, HD > Library > Printers > PPDs > Contents > Resources > en.lproj. When you added the printer queue and selected the Canon C3200-C1, this would indicate the installer has done its job and added the files to the folders above so that you can add the printer and use it. Once the installer has completed this task it is safe for you to trash the file, although it won't hurt to keep it somewhere in case you ever need to add the driver files again.

Hope this answers your question. If not, pls reply.
