Printer problem driver question

Just got on Snow leopard.
I have Brother 1440 HL laser printer.

I've downloaded a driver from their site they say is for 10.6

In my dock is an icon of the printer. I click on that, open tab printer set up, but driver version is still previous one, even though I've downloaded and intalled the new driver, and rebooted three times. what can I do? thanks!

imac, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

that's a start. It was in twice, I deleted both from system pref. then download from dmg the new driver. it in there. now instead of G5 for local it says location imac which is good.
but still shows the old driver number 1.4 instead of new number 2.2! why?

Also, how get the printer icon back in the dock?

no, idea. as I said, I'm no printing expert. try this. control-click on the printer in system preferences->printing and select "reset printing system".
then add the printer again. also, do make sure you've installed the correct driver for this printer. try this link from apple

add the printer in system preferences.
then go to home directory/library/printers and drag the printer from there to the dock.

thanks V.
I did reset, and all the printers disappeared.
Ok I re-added them.
The Brother driver still show the old version.

I downloaded from that link for the brother drivers, but what did it do? where did that download go?
(honestly though I don't think it will do better than me going to the HP site, right?)

the download went to your downloads folder. it's a dmg file. mount the dmg by double-clicking on it. there is an installer inside. double-click on it to run it.

yeh, I would think so too. I just want to make sure you got the correct driver.

the drivers are in /library/printers. but don't delete stuff from there by hand. there should not be any need. try deleting and adding the printer again. also, when printer is added click on "options and supplies" in printer system preferences. in the popup click on "driver". try manually choosing the driver you want from there.

Libary, Printers --
don't see drivers, just see printers listed. I wold think I'd see 100 brother drivers that just downloaded, not there.

you are looking in the wrong library. you need the one at the top level of the hard drive, not in your home folder.
In system pref, option, drivers -- does not list the driver #, just has a generic title: Brother printer.

in printing system preferences->options->driver click on the currently selected driver for "print using". you'll get a pulldown menu. select "select printer software" in the pulldown menu. it will give you a popup with all currently installed printer drivers. but really, it should automatically select the best driver. I'm not sure you should be fighting it like this...

Mac HD to Library, printers, don't see driver names, see ton of other stuff though/

as i said, you shouldn't move items there by hand.
I sytem pref. I found the list, but now the # I have downloaded from Brother site several times.

select any one.
And where is print utility these days, don't see it anymore...

it's gone. printing system preferences that you are using is all that should be necessary.

Don't want to move anything there but would be nice to "see" the driver I just downloaded there and delete the one the old one.

----
the current # not listed so can't select it.

did not understand last part: utilities offer, for example, clean cleaner, do nozzle check, this is in system pref? where?
