PPD for HP LaserJet P1505n

PPD for HP LaserJet P1505n

I would like to print from my iBook to an HP LaserJet P1505n attached to a Windows XP desktop. I have printed to other HP LaserJet models on that desktop through Windows network sharing, but only after finding a PPD for them in the printing control panel. There is no PPD for the P1505n, however, and the generic PostScript option produces garbage. I have already downloaded the Mac OS X driver for the P1505n, but that has been no help. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Well, that model only understands HP PCL 5e, so the PCL6 won't work, but I don't know why a Generic Laserjet doesn't work!?

Hi Clint, did you Repair Permissions & Reboot after installing?

A PPD should have been installed.

In finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and paste this in, is it any of the folders there or not?

/usr/share/cups/

OK, I fixed the permissions, which had gotten messy. Then I reinstalled the P1505n driver. This all seemed to make no difference. There is still no PPD for the P1505n, or any more generic PPD except for "HP LaserJet Series PCL 6 CUPS", which did not work.

I went to /usr/share/cups and ran

find . -name "*.ppd"

and got

./model/okidat24.ppd
./model/okidata9.ppd

Here is the directory listing for the laserjet.ppd

Lines 5 and 6 of the file are

*% Sample HP LaserJet driver PPD file for the Common UNIX Printing
*% System (CUPS).

So this seems like it might be what I want. Do I have to edit this?

You answered my question with the magic words "HP PCL 5e". Under the Generic option., the Printer configuration menu was apparently smart enough to recommend

Generic PCL 5c Printer Foomatic/hpijs
Generic PCL 5e Printer Foomatic/hpijs
Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer Foomatic/hpijs

The 5e option does work. Thanks.

I'm unsure whether it was necessary to install the P1505n driver to see these Generic options offered, but on a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard, I could connect to printer via Windows by selecting a generic 5e option without installing the driver.
