Watch Movies in the Netherlands

I just bought an Apple TV. Now I find out that I can't hire or download movies because the Dutch version doesn't have the menu item Movies. Apparently for our language there are no movies to hire? I can't buy or hire American shop movies. This is really disappointing. It's called APPLE TV. So you buy it to watch movies. But when you buy it in Holland or another European country you can't watch any.

Mac Book Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

welcome to discussions, odejonge !

this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10623567&#10623567 is about the iTunes store in Denmark, but it should apply to your situation.

by the way, in Germany we enjoy quite an offering at the iTunes store (no help to you).

merry christmas !

Ok I understand that I'm total nitwit in this discussions which is already going on for years but I find it misleading that apple doesn't warn you when you buy an Apple TV that it doesn't do what it promisses in certain countries. The fact that you can simply return the product within 30 days is not enough because I had to go through a lot of effort to get the thing up and running. And then to find out that I can't hire or buy HD movies because I'm from Holland is a big disappointment.

I sympathise, it's all down to the movie studios/distributors local licensing deals in essence.

I bet Apple would love to have a single global store without having to manage all these separate ones.

US was first to get movie purhcases/rentals and HD.

Other countries lag behind.

In UK we have pretty good options for rental, but still can't purchase films in HD, though some Tv shows can be purchased.

You basically need to check your home itunes store to see what's available.

I'm stilling trying to decide whether or not to get an Apple TV (or a Mac Mini instead). However, I have read online that some people have found a work around to your problem by creating a US iTunes Store account for themselves (a quick Google search shows you how to do this) and then to buy iTunes gift vouchers for themselves to get credit in this account. They are then able to rent movies from outside the US as if they are within the US. Maybe worth investigating. I'm in the Netherlands too and would be interested to hear what you find.
