Spotlight won't index a network drive

I am trying to get Spotlight to index one of the drives on my D-Link DNS-321 NAS. I have turned on indexing on the drive (Volume_2) via the following terminal command:

mdutil -i on /Volumes/Volume_2/

When I check the status with the mdutil -s /Volumes/Volume_2/ it says that indexing is enabled, but Spotlight is not indexing this drive. I have tried running the command logged in as an admin and as root with and without sudo and have tried restarting the computer several times but Spotlight still does not index the drive. Is there another way to force Spotlight to index a network drive?

Hi wnichol

Apparently, D-Link uses the ext2 file system for this NAS.
Mac OS X can build Spotlight indexes on HFS+ volumes only.
